OK, NOW you can start carrying weapons on your exploration ships

I did actually posit this previously: It is possible that FD have provided the engineered huge increases in jump range to off-set the (new) requirement to carry weapons and defensive shields. It could simply be that our p***ing contest on who can jump over 200LY in one go is over. We could jump something like 35-40LY in an exploration-centric Anaconda previously, if you now add a G5 FSD boost with the accompanying engineered modules you could get that again while carrying a full combat load.

I get that and it does make some sense. The issue for me isn't that we can now have weapons and keep something around the original jump ranges it's the fact that the way combat works means you'd for sure not want to engage in it. Why would you even consider engaging in combat 30K light years out from the bubble. The only result unless the enemy is really easy is an early return.

I'd even go as far to say being pulled out of hyperspace and attacked on deep exploration actually makes the whole thing pointless.

I think Thargoid encounters are going to be more like raids - at least initially. And yes, that does sound terrible but it may well keep that to the people who want to engage with it. The stuff that has come out suggests 'gearing up', it needing 'multiple participants' and possibly multiple phases as these things can't just be taken down they are so powerful.

So, for me, very raid like. At least in the beginning. They're not ships that are going to attack you 1-1 I think they're going to be special locations that need a raid-like attack.

Ahhhh.... it's gonna be set piece battles with Capital ships and we get to 'join in'. Probably have some kind of alert go out live so we all go rushing over and watch a Farragut get gutted.

We have confirmation that Thargoids won't be all over the galaxy, straight from The Breadbin himself:

"Of course, the prospect of war has some players concerned. Space truckers and deep space explorers don’t typically keep the heavily-armed ships one that you’d expect to see trying to hold its own against a Thargoid. But Braben says plenty of folks who won’t be severely impacted by the aliens’ reemergence. At least not right out of the gate.

“It’s not going to affect the whole galaxy at the same time. It’s going to be in an area,” Braben said. “So players can choose to engage with it or not. Same with player organizations.”"

Emphasis mine, and source is here. I'd say the whole article is worth reading too.
I hope it won't be just limited to the Pleiades though. Would be nice to explore uncharted territory, with a few of the permit zones opened up, instead of an area that's by now pretty much part of the bubble. But since Mr. Braben has said "in an area", I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks for that, apparently I am out of rep for today so +1 VRep

But what players are going to find is that maybe their super pimped out fully engineered hotrod ships aren’t as well-equipped to take on Thargoids and aren’t quite as well-equipped to defend against them.
Well, sounds like all the dead weight of that "militaristic Explorers" is still just to stow their crotches ;)

You do realise that by "militaristic explorer" I meant something more akin to fitting out my ships like something from Star Trek's Federation ships?

I mean, the USS Enterprise is always touted as being a peaceful exploration ship, but by Jove it could defend itself. Or run if it had to.

And that's what I meant. So my Conda is fitted, for example, with turreted beams ("phasers"), plasma accelerators ("photon torpedoes"? :p), and other stuff. Just in case. The hull is also engineered to make it that wee bit more protective.

Same with the ExploraCutter.

Because I've flown paper exploration ships before, and I've had one occasion where I was interdicted by a rabid PvP'er who blew up my exploration Clipper. Once and only once did that happen. I learned a lot from that.

And I still have the choice of Brave Sir Robin-ing out of trouble, which would be my default choice as I'm no PvP'er.

But anyway. With your and other's somewhat arrogant & snobbish attitude towards my opinion about paper exploration ships, I now very sincerely hope that eventually, each and every one of you who absolutely insist on flying a ship unarmed and with shields made of tissue paper, get your comeuppance out in the Void. Alas, this probably won't happen because Braben has already stated that the Thargoid content is 'optional' in that it's only initially going to be in certain areas of the galaxy. But I do note he did say 'initially', and I hope that means you eventually won't be safe anywhere in the galaxy, so there is that. No doubt this one paragraph will be singled out with an outraged "Oh so you wish ill on us!" rather than addressing my points about the USS Enterprise being a 'militaristic exploration ship' ;)

Good luck out there o7

We aren't flying the Enterprise from Star Trek, we are flying Serenity from Firefly. We don't want nor need weapons because we aren't out to destroy nor attack anyone, we are just making our way in the 'Verse exploring and making ends meet, doing what we can to keep our ships flying while bothering nobody.

So you were blown up by a PvP'er and you decided to fly a combat ship, the same happened to me and I simply moved to Mobius Group. Different solution, but same problem solved.

Why do you hate that so much? Why are you wishing ill and destruction upon commanders who just want to play peacefully? And I'm not singling your one paragraph out, I am taking your opinions as a whole. You are not behaving like a very nice person.

Hey, it's fine if you want to explore in full military outfit. That's the way you want to play the game, flying an Enterprise of some sort, and that is okay because the game allows you to do that. Also the game allows me to do what I love doing: exploring the edges of the galaxy where squeezing every single Ly out of the ship is crucial. Don't you think it's great that we play a game that allows for such variety of gameplay and styles?

I believe in something called "live and let live". Diversity, tolerance, and all that. So I don't care how you choose to play the game. You having fun is what matters.

On the other hand wishing harm on people who simply disagree with your preferred gameplay style is not exactly nice. So please, let's not spoil this really lovely forum with hard feelings and harsh words.

I'm not a violent person, this is a violent game, and most of the characters in it seem mad beyond reason. Too much lead in the tea, or something. But yeah, I at least don't have a problem with other players playing how they choose to, so long as it's within the intended framework of the game and not breaking any rules or the like.
