Hardware & Technical Okay, but how well does it fly with an XBox type joypad?

As the subject says, really, will the game play decently when controlled with just a basic gamepad like a 360 style controller?

Is this going to put the player at a serious disadvantage?

Any other comments?

Cheers.

From what I have already seen on the forum people are having some trouble in controlling the ship with control pads probably due to high sensitivity.

A couple of months ago I tried the alpha with a xbox style joypad, compared to a joystick I found the thumb joysticks seriously lacked precision control, probably something to do with having my thumb over the top of it, instead of my entire hand wrapped around it.

Saying that, that was just me, at the end of the day it all boils down to preference, others on this forum like using a joypad.

It's all I've ever used for ED... it's satisfactory and, like most things, you get used to it. No doubt it is much less capable than a HOTAS though.

I have tried KB/Mouse, joysticks and XBox 360 controller and the XBox controller was by far the worst method. Don't get me wrong I love the controller itself for driving games or fighting games, but for E:D it is just the wrong combination of sensitivity and buttons.
Perhaps it is just a matter of practice, at some point I just decided to stick with KB/Mouse because that seemed to be working best so now it has become the choice for me.
If I knew anyone who could afford it I would put an X52 Pro on my Xmas list though....

It depend a bid of how you want to play.
in a serious session I use a X52 pro.
but hanging on the couch like a potato is nice as well some times.
for the last a wireless Xbox controller is best.
also pizza grease on your expensive stick isn't advisable.
so have both I say.

I have no problems with the 360 gamepad. I pass through all Incursion waves in 10 Minutes with it, should be fine. But let me note that i have custom settings, like flight throttle axis and roll on the left analog stick, pitch and yaw und the right stick and thrust up/left/right/down on the dpad.

I'd consider myself a pretty good gamer - but I can't play the 1.1 Alpha with my XBox360 controller - I just found it too hard.

I've ordered a X55 Rhino that should be here in a few days, but by the looks of things I'll have to wait until the premium beta is out to be able to use it :(

I’ve been using a 360-pad from the outset (alpha); yes I’ve had to acclimate but surprisingly the 360 pad handles better than advertised, in fact I won’t be upgrading anytime soon. Initially I suggest you select control pad with yaw (default options) and further play-test configurations in the combat scenarios to suit your style of play. You’ll have to acclimate regardless; the nature of game-play differs from individual to individual so no singular setting or input device will suffice across the board.

I can't recommend these because I haven't tried one yet:-

but I'll definitely giving them a go. Cheaper than a HotAs but might just help me be a slightly less worse player.

I just read a load of reviews and considering that most of the Dev team use XBox360 controllers I have bought some Kontrol Freek FPS ELITE for XBOX 360 ones from Amazon.
I will update the forum as to what difference they make... :)

There's a LOT of people using a 360 controller successfully. I tried one and couldn't get used to it, so ended up getting a HOTAS.
There's not much difference in cost (assuming you don't already have the 360) if you go for the Thrustmaster Hotas X. I got mine for just over £30.

No problems here with the 360 controller, and seeing as it cost's a 10th of the price of a decent HOTAS set up .. it's good value too

*edit ... if the HOTAS mentioned in the above post is decent that would be good to go for

If you're well practised with a game pad and have learned to be precise with one then it's perfectly usable.

It'd be good to know how many of the people that tried and hated an xbox controller were trying one for the first time.

Personally I prefer the PS3 DS3, it's what I've been practising with for decades :)

I haven't used an xbox controller but I do use a ps3/pc compatible controller which I assume is the same. I find it an excellent control method which I prefer over a keyboard and mouse. The analog buttons do seem highly sensitive mind and so its not that easy to get the very fine movement controls perhaps those who use a HOTAS have. I always thought it was down to my controller because it was a cheapo £7 jobby.:S Still, I'm happy with it in general. ;)

I'm also a xbox pad user and don't have any problems with the stadard configuration. I tried fa off for some advanced flying, but thats actually a pain in the ass. Somehow I'm able to get the ship in the direction I want but I have difficulties to aim with fa off. Always drifting a bit too far from the target, so I don't hit anything.

Somebody here who uses a joypad and have fa off?
