Okay WTH is with the new ADS?????

Been away for a while and come back to find the discovery scanner is totally different. Not only are there about 30 controls now instead of the honk but they all, helpfully, come UNBOUND out of the gate and NONE are explained. There isn’t even any new training videos or scenarios on it. For some reason we have to mode switch to even use the ADS now and nothing is displayed at all (except a 5 min roll of the 30 new bodies you discovered ticking across your screen one by one) but nothing at all is displayed in the system map. Finally managed to figure out how to get into the scanner but what all this tuning and controls, which for whatever the hell reason isn’t just bound to your standard flight controls, they all also come inbound, aren’t explained at all and I’m totally lost.

And then later you’ll want to see some of the cool stuff that you do find in your codex, but that’s another keybind and game mechanic.

Haven’t had a chance on the mining yet but I heard that’s gotten quite a bit cooler than before. I’m just totally lost on the new ADS mechanics. It’s like they’ve made it 40x more complex but didn’t bother to make a new training video or mission for it, Enix would be helpful, or have some standard binds, or at least explain what these new controls are. I had left my shop floating a few K out from Sag A* and I’m totally lost on this new system lol. I looked a bit bit can’t really find a comprehensive video explaining it all and what the best binds would be. (Still don’t have any clue why they just wouldn’t use the standard flight controls and leave the honk in the standard HUD like it’s always been. Doesn’t throttling down in order to scan around for lengthy times kinda leave people trying to find their destinations in the bubble sitting ducks for interdiction?) anybody know of a good video for a source of info in this new stuff so I can get up to speed a bit?

I have been interdicted a couple times while doing FSS scanning, but it’s not that big a deal. Interdictions happen when throttle is up or down so that makes no difference. Can still honk at speed. Just throttle down to do the real scanning.
Anyway, you’ll get it. Mostly it’s just enter mode, tune up/down zoom in/out exit FSS.
I do wish they fed us more explaination about which binds could be reused from other controls like combat bindings.
The point of have different cockpit modes must be so that we can not fear hitting the guns while scanning, or the scanner while fighting. But then why not put more safety latches (or just explaination) about which bindings are safe to re-use and which will accidentally fire off when you don’t want them to.
Like, heatisnk will still fire off in scanning mode, but will chaff? They leave it to us to figure those out and experiment with the bindings to find a combination that will work and won’t fire chaff while trying to scan.

You've been out for more than a year, I take it?

Just set your controls to default and then reverse engineer from there. No need to map keys to a whole new system when you have no clue how it works

There is like 10 slides that come up in game when you use it the first time. How some people miss it is beyond me. Luckily There is also a keybind for help with it that brings them up again.

Pretty sure the info that comes up first time you open the FSS explains it pretty well.
Key binds you haven't set should be marked with a ( ! ) just to see if you're paying any attention.
Patch notes cover the rest.

Anything you still don't get, we'll be glad to explain, if you just ask like a civil individual.

Hm, I don’t recall that coming up but someone did mention that it can be brought up manually but binging a button to a help menu so I’ll have to give that a look see. I did see the (!) markers when logging on again but there’s just so many and I don’t know what 5/6ths of them do :p so figuring a good bind off the cuff is a bit difficult. I’ll have to do some experimenting around. One thing I did notice now that I’ve got at least some preliminary binds done is that in the newest system I’m on that has a whole boatload of bodies in it, it keeps popping up that the zoom failed. I’ve made sure to match the tuning etc but it won’t zoom on some of them which is a bit perplexing.

Gotcha. So even if it pops up that it’s in use elsewhere it’s nbd as it shouldn’t interfere anywho being a separate system.

Then you need to use your 'increment zoom' bound key (two bodies soo close that the zoom won't distinguish them).

I quite enjoy the new system.....beats spending 20 minutes travelling to a HMC planets you saw in System Map, only to find it's a ing Ice Planet.....have you played Planetgolf yet OP?

"Beyond me" Nice...

On topic: It's not that bad takes about 5 minutes of tinkering. Guess some people can't be bothered.

So coming back after a huge update you didn't first look to see what had changed?

Of course you could look in the Guides and Tutorials sub-forum (even I did a thing for this in there), look on the yootoob where yes there are F D tutorial videos and some spiffing stuff from Obs Ant and others (my efforts are very rough compared to those "content creators").

Basically, in the time it took to rant write your post you could have learned what to bind and watched videos of the stuff in action.

As the others said, there is an ingame explanation and a youtube video.

It's probably best to use the default bindings, note that you don't need all buttons, some are optional. What's binded by default should be enough and you can change it to your liking from there.

Bottom line, it ain't that hard and you can acually find things now... Want HGE's, you can find them with the FSS, want an alien site? You can find it with the FSS and get it's exact location from the DSS. Easy peasy... Good luck, and stay thirsty!

Ah, so they did update the pilot training video then. I was assuming that there would have been a video to itself and hadn’t thought to check that one assuming it was still the older version. Honest to god the slides didn’t pop up for me when I logged on the first time, but someone did mention how to get them to pop up manually and I got that goin now. Sorry all if I came across as overly salty, had a case of the after Christmas crankiness. Thanks for the help and I’ll continue to tinker and get it set up nicely. Still floating a couple K from Sag A*, determined to make it, been out to Colonia about a dozen times but for whatever reason never took the jaunt over to Sag A*. Gettin close, I can almost see the swirly doom from here :p

Adaptive Zoom Failed. The most common cause is not being lined up with the target. Bodies are noted by a circle when tuned, and there is a reticle in your HUD indicator that needs to be inside that circular marker.
