Old Elite player, confused about controls in ED

Let it be known that I played old Elite for more time than I care to admit, and I'm very comfortable with how the original controls.

Now I've gotten access to the beta, and I'm trying out the first mission, but I'm utterly confused by how the thing flies.

I suppose I really should be posting a video or something to illustrate what my problem is, but I'll attempt to explain it in words first. Please bear with me.

Let's say I come to a stop (or at least close to it) with one of the cargo containers leisurely floating past me horizontally in the middle of the screen, moving to the right.

At this point, I roll my ship 90 degrees to the right, with the goal to have the cargo container floating upwards so that I can pull into it by pulling back on the stick.

But, when I do this, the cargo container is still floating to the right! It's as though it it being controlled, and its movement constantly realigning itself to ensure it's always floating horizontally relative to my ship's orientation. The end result being that the only way I can get the container in my sights is to use the ship's yaw controls (which I have mapped to my pedals).

Can anyone explain to me what is going on here? If it wasn't for the fact that a lot of other people have been playing this and seemingly have no problems with it, I'd conclude that this is a bug in the game. That can't be the case since I'm sure other people would have reported this in that case.

OK first if you are in BETA their are no canisters you can scoop in to the cargo bay ,but I will re'fly the single player mission to check . The cargo canisters you can scoop are normally at a full stop they do not normally move , unless hit by your ship or an asteroid we have played football with a few of them to break the testing for a little while . I will reload the game and check now .

Edit

Yep no canisters in the single player missions I will scan the main forum for a link to show how it is don so that when the BETA is available in multi player you can see how testers are doing it now .

You shoot the cannisters not collect them

By the way you are not alone in struggling. I am unable to find a setup that allows me to control the ship. I have watched lots of videos and read lots of things but whatever I try doesn't work for me. My problem is I cannot yet reliably get successive hits on target.

To be fair its not the game that's at fault its me, my hands are not what they were thirty years ago thanks to Arthur's intervention.

There are some good pieces of advice on these forums and some good training videos by people like Kroy.

I started with keyboard and mouse like I used in Elite and Frontier Elite 2.

But there is no reason to only use this steering form. Other than - I used to ...

I struggled somewhat. Bought a x52 pro. World of difference, feels more right and much more correct feeling. Especially the mini finger joystick on the throtle is super for tight spots and docking.

I know its alot of money to spend on a pc-accesorie. But if you spend 100+ hours in game its cheaper than many other fun activities. And only gets cheaper ...

Its like with beds. People buy cheap ones and forget how much of their life they will spend with it.

Edit - dont know why i read that you use keyboard only. I dont even know if you use a stick..

This sounds rather odd because when you start the mission, the canisters are supposed to be stationary.
Sounds like you have left thrust being applied somehow - or you have hit the canister(s) with your ship.

What controls are you using (i.e. keyboard & mouse/joystick/xbox controller etc)?

And is flight assist on or off?

I'm using a Thrustmaster Cougar (with the pressure sensitive mod, but that's not related) with external pedals. Flight assist is off.

I'll try again once I get back home.

There are issues with multiple controllers in your version of the Alpha stand alone - This could very well be the issue. This is fixed in later releases.

Either disable or unplug the pedals and try again to see if that is indeed the issue.

Try flight assist on to check for the same issue.
I have a suspicion that with FAOFF you are still moving slowly off to the left, giving the impression the canister is moving to the right...

And you were exactly right. :) It turns out that I had mapped the lateral and vertical trust to the analogue thumbstick on the throttle (a very nice place to have it) and the stick wasn't perfectly calibrated.

So, the thumbstick was constantly applying ever so little lateral thrust, meaning that the ship was moving to the left all the time.

After fixing that, everything works perfectly. Thanks everybody for the help!

Oftentimes, all things considered, the simplest explanation turns out to be correct - Occam's Razor :D

Glad you got it sorted - now go carve up some moving targets that shoot back!
