Newcomer / Intro old fart BIG problem.....

ok I was trying to upgrade my starter ship cargo space and jump distance., I sold the weapons and wanted to upgrade cargo to 6. I had 4 so apparently upgraded it once before. (old guys forget stuff if longer than a day) I went to outfitting and selected e1 for 2 capacity. and bought it. thinking I would end up with 6 original 4 + 2. I was wrong since instead of going from 4 to 6 I ended up with 2. outfitting in where I am only has the E1 for 2 but in any case I seem to only be able to put in one cargo anyway. at least here. can someone give my an outline t o follow to get my ship to total of 6 cargo? assume, which should be easy after reading this, that I am lost and old and stupid. ty in advance if someone can help.

Unfortunately Sidewinder has very limited internal compartments. You can fit 2ton cargo rack into size 1 internal compartment and 4ton into size 2 compartment. Unfortunately internal compartments are also the part of the ship that house your shields. So if you want more cargo space, you will have to sell them and fit another cargo rack instead.

I would, now, advise you against it, though, because the ship without shields is really vulnerable. It would be better for you to stick with only 4 tons, do some lightweight cargo missions from Bulletin board or simple trading runs, for example between agricultural systems (food, drinks) and High Tech systems (crop harvesters and other agri tech) and raise money to buy a Hauler. It's quite cheap and can fit many more cargo racks up to, I think 20 tons.

ok. I think before I sold shields to get room for 4 cargo so maybe station only has size 2 so I sold my 4 and got 2. shrug. if I go t o someplace that has size 4 cargo (e2 I think) then it should work back to 4? and do u know of station in jump distance of evarate?

Just check all the modules at the bottom. The only ones you get the choice of are the ones marked "internal compartment" (i think - im not in game and an old fart too - memory)

I ripped out the discovery scanner and fitted a class (size) 1 cargo compartment which gave me an extra 2 cargo. You'll need a class 2 cargo for one of your other compartments for the other 4 cargo holds which gives the ship a total of 6T cargo space.

You could probably get rid of the shield for more cargo if you're brave enough. I have never done this...

I am of the opinion that it is a Sidewinder, drop the shields, carry more cargo. You cannot lose, and you will learn to fly better if your first ship has no shields. Guaranteed.

If you are still at the same station, or nearby, there is a chance the 4t cargo rack you sold might still be there. Scroll up to the top of the list of components (where you bought the 2t).

I am back to 4 and also sold shields. have a blank space under the 2 sets of 2 cargo. down to 2000cr after selling and buying these things. started at 4000 so have wastes 2ooo already. not sure I want to risk another 1000 if it does not give me the last set of 2 carfgo space. jump empty is 7.9ly I think. not sure but close. not sure what it is full.

well it was a 2 I sold for another 2 was I am stupid. I am now back to 4 but do not seem to be able t o buy the third 2 even though I sold my shields. I think I may be lost in this experiment. sigh

And not try to compete with a T9 in the slot when you can still hardly fly straight!

You did not lose any money, Outfitters do not have all items. Check around in outfitting again, it may take a bit getting used to.

You can get a max cargo of ten on a sidewinder, Two 4s and a 2. Build up to them, Run 800 to 1000 credits profit per slot when you can afford to lose the cargo at least twice and you can be in a Hauler or Viper in no time, even after you lose a few.

Or upgrade the sidewinder, fly it a while it is a great little ship.

Don't give up. :)
Sidey has three internal compartments (the three fields at the bottom in outfitting screen. One is size 1 (you can fit 2tons cargo rack, there) and two are size 2 (you can fit 4 tons in those) so theoretically you can have 10 tons capacity
If you leave shields in one of the C2 compartments, then you will have 6 tons.

Without shields the extra 4 tons of high profit cargo will about pay for the insurance on a Sidey every run or two if the profit is just okay, good overall odds.

ok am hoping to find station with size 4 cargo. I have sold shields and scanner. hopefully I can get cargo to 10. have to r e read above to see what all I can sell to do that. not sure he said but...

Okay I hope I can clear it up for you.

There are 3 internal compartments in a Sidewinder

Each compartment has a default class and a max class. Just imagine the size of a box.

The compartment your shield generator was in has a default class of 2 and a max class of 2. Than means I can put size 1 or 2 boxes in it.

A Cargo Rack X4 is a class 2 box or module. So I can fit a Cargo Rack X4 there or an X2 if I wanted to but I cannot see a reason.

The X4 cargo rack that it came with originally stays in that class 2 compartment.

The cargo rack X2 can fit in the size 1 compartment where your scanner was.

dont mean to jack the thread, but when you buy upgrades do you still own the old upgrades? what about the "loaned" ship attachments?
I was looking to add a fuel scoop but would have to remove something else to do it. Would i still be able to re attach the "loaned" item once i got to my destination?

No you do not own the old upgrades but you can buy back anything you sell while in the same station. These items will show at the top of the outfitting list. You are not losing any money by selling them. The loaned attachments are worth zero credits. The other items will sell for the same price you can buy them for.

There is also an easily overlooked compare tab when you select something to buy.
