Old non-VR ED player, new VR (Rift) owner

I've had three separate attempts at getting Virtual Desktop to work (that is, switching between it and ED) and all failed. I did manage to get it to switch once but was unable to get it to do it again. Each attempt has been an exercise in frustration, particularly as I've read of a few people getting it to work. So for me Virtual Desktop has been a waste of £10 but hey-ho. Must get round to trying Bigscreen.

I'm 99.9% certain that the new HMD quality setting IS the same as the Debug Tool setting. Use of the Debug tool was a workaround but now that this setting is supported directly in the game there is no longer any reason to use it. Set you SS to 0.65 and your HMD quality to 2.0. No need to run the Debug Tool at all (unless you're using its monitoring facilities in some way).

Ahh, ok. That may be true. I am no expert at all. i will try it out. Funny thing is, setting 2.0 i get some stuttering in stations from time to time. Setting it to 1.9 everything is fine. So finetuning works better with the DebugTool.

By the way, VoiceAttack is a really nice addition to a vr headset. It's really great to stand up and look into the scenery of your cockpit from a position next to your chair, while voice controlling the SC approach to a station. My wife declared me nuts, but well... Only by voice commands you can feel like an actual *commander*, right? (And unlike my wife, VoiceAttack is very obedient as well.. :D)

You can't use Virtual Desktop to switch ED between VR and Monitor mode. Sorry if you got that impression. My post was simply saying my sequence of steps. I assume many people will still want access to Windows when playing ED in VR, so Virtual Desktop (or Bigscreen) is the way to do this. You can then access all those great 3rd party ED sites like Inara, eddb, coriolis, etc.

Use EDProfiler to easily switch between VR and monitor profiles (graphics settings). But it still requires restarting ED so that it starts up fresh with the new graphics settings. Sorry, thought that was obvious.

Well, I think that's exactly how I understood it. Switching between ED in VR mode and *other* desktop apps like a browser. Something like Alt-Tab. Never got that to work with Big Screen, but haven't tried too much.

Is this setting in the game itself? Wheresit?

It's called something like HMD quality, has a bunch of values like 1.0, 1.5, 1.75, 2.0, etc. I'll get you a screengrab of the setting as soon as my ED has finished applying this morning's update.

n.b. I've read in several places that it multiplies with the Debug Tool Pixels per Pixel setting so probably best not to set both.

The quality settings are in the graphics settings of the game. I don't know how to access it with the control method you use . I use my CV1 with the XBox controller that came with my headset.

I think the way to get to the other settings is to highlight the "quality" menu and press the "Y" button.

Sorry if this is wrong. It's something like that anyway. I'm at work and so I can't check if this is right.

Edit: Ninja'd by someone who's listed instructions almost as vague as mine <grin> I do think it is just a case of going to the settings and seeing what's there.

Quality setting is one of those that has both a drop-down value (e.g. Custom, VR High, VR Low, etc) and a '+' button to expand that section and get to the individual options. If you're using a HOTAS you need to bind the "UI nested toggle" function (in the control bindings somewhere) to another button. Then your primary button activates the combo and your "nested toggle" button will expand the option.

Doh, my PC at work doesn't have the setting because it doesn't have the Oculus. Never mind, I'm sure you'll find it!

Thank you for that. I've been frustrated with having to use the mouse to get at that menu.

They have pedals now??

Also on a Warthog too. Lovely bit of gear.

Yep, they were released shortly before the new T.16000 FCS HOTAS and are the same quality. Solid plastic build with very good sliding mechanic for the central axis. Only downsides are that the pedals are very close together, some extra 5 cm would have been nice and they look out of place, when in a Warthog rig. Everything else is very good and at that price, its nothibg but a steal...

One other question; what's your method of controll, when in VR mode? Before, I was a keyboard/mouse pilot, but won't be able do re. HMD - is HOTAS the way?

I personally feel that a HOTAS is the way to go, regardless, it's nice to have all controls at your fingertips, short of actually needing to type to search for a system, or to communicate.

I have a bit of a list of various HOTAS combinations, but my person favourite setup is my CH Pro throttle (I have yet to find a throttle better suited for ED), Warthog stick (lots of nice buttons in all the right places), and I use VKB T-rudder III pedals.

Now, that is a bit of an investment (I'm going to be getting SLAW or Crosswinds pedals at some stage), but I can also recommend the T16000M form Thrustmaster, and the VKB Cobra M5 for more budget conscious options. Both sticks have twist, the T16000M is probably a little bit nicer, but the button layout kinda sucks (too many wasted buttons on the base), the VKB a little too "loose" for my liking, but a sensational number of buttons on the stick, and all reachable. Both sticks are fairly inexpensive, and the twist means you won't need to invest in a rudder pedal setup.

CH Pro also make great sticks, built to last, with button layout similar to the Warthog, but also no twist.

No matter what CH Pro throttle is *the* throttle for this game.

Z...
