Hello

I began over 10 years ago in Mercenary release. Got pretty good at the game for 3 years, took a big break and now redownloaded Elite to have another play.
Two questions.

1st
What were the basic keys for starting a jump sequence? I started in the middle of a system, struggled with ship controls, even movement, with a warning panel telling me to switch modes with "M" discovery and combat mode.
Kind of got past that, identified my home system and targeted it. Then nothing, the key binds in the options were blank, so I assigned space bar just to do something, but nothing happened.
So what are the base keys and method for a jump? Maybe jog my muscle memory a bit.

2nd
If I can get the game running right, I might splash out on Odyssey as its cheap. From the store page I'm directed to steam. I have a steam account, but not on Elite. How do I link the accounts? Do I purchase on steam and link the accounts? How?

Thanks CMDRS

I believe that you are having a confusion with the jump button that ED uses by default. It can be a bit confusing. This needs a bit explaining, so bear with me:

There actually three different "jump" buttons in ED:
  1. A button to jump to supercruise (ie. to travel within your current system) or drop from it to normal space.
  2. A button to hyperjump to another system (which needs to be targeted for it to work).
  3. A combo button that does both, depending on whether you have targeted another system or not.
For some reason on keyboard only that third button is bound by default (to J, if your bindings haven't been wiped out). If I remember correctly, the other two are not. (If you are using a game controller, then the functions 1 and 3 are mapped by default to button combos, but I'm assuming you aren't using a controller.)

That combo button (J by default), which serves the dual role, can be a bit confusing because, as mentioned, what it does depends on whether you have targeted another system or not: If you have, then it will start a hyperjump to that system. If you haven't, then it will start or stop supercruise. (This means that if you have targeted another system and you want to jump to supercruise instead, or out of it, you need to untarget it.)

From your description it sounds to me that perhaps you mapped that button 2 to the space bar. The hyperjump button does nothing if you haven't targeted another system.

You need to either map the "supercruise" button to something, in addition to the hyperjump button (something I recommend, as it causes less confusion), or you need to unmap that hyperjump button and map that combo button instead, whichever behavior you prefer.

If you have the Elite Dangerous launcher, I recommend purchasing Odyssey directly from the Frontier shop, in which case you'll be able to download and run it directly from the launcher.

Can't tell you what the default control for initiating an FSD jump is, but...

Press Escape.
Select Options, Controls, Ship Controls.
Look down the list to "Flight Miscellaneous" then click the "+"
4th and 5th items tell you what input is used to engage Supercruise (for getting around a system fast) and Hyperspace (for jumping to a different system).

Don't forget that you need to be pointing at your destination system for your FSD to engage and you need to be flying toward it.
If you're in a ship that drifts a lot (Imperial Cutter, I'm looking at you), you can be pointing at your destination system but not actually flying toward it.
In that case, you'll get a message saying something like "Align with target system" and you just need to speed up for a few seconds, until you're flying in the direction you're pointing.

Can't really help with the Steam thing since I just access ED directly via the Frontier launcher.
Sorry.

Thanks for your help CMDRS, I'm sort of sorted now, still lots of key binds to sort out, but at least I got back to my home base (Evans port, Parutis) and sorted the graphics and menus and all my ships are ok. Cobra III(light combat), Python(transport), Krait II(combat), Anaconda(heavy combat), Type 7(mining).

But stuck outside the station for a while trying to remember docking permission buttons, but I eventually sorted that.

two last questions

Is the type 8 worth a look at a mining ship over the type 7?

I used to have the throttle move at 20% increments, so from 0, I hit "W" 5 times to 100% throttle, then "S" to decrease and so on. Looking through the settings I cant seam to find the place to do that? Can anyone advise which setting does that?

To be honest, I don't think the Type-8 is the best mining ship. With just one medium hard point and four small ones, and a small power distributor, it struggles at efficient laser mining. I haven't tried it with core mining, but I don't think I even need to.

It kind of makes sense, at least from an in-universe point of view, because the Type-8 is designed from the ground up to be a cargo ship, not a mining ship.

I think the Python is the best mining ship (for both types of mining). Good amount of cargo space, good hard points, good power distributor.

Type 8 isn't great at Laser mining, but consider core mining with a dash of abrasion blasters and subsurface deposits. I'm too tied up in the CG loop to pull mine out of storage and tinker with it, though.

If you stopped playing in 2017 there is tons of stuff added to the game over the years.
The grind was reduced in every aspect of the game, making credits is faster. So have fun using smaller ships at first.

still lots of key binds to sort out
That's the curse of ED - unless you want to play with one of the defualt binds.
Whatever you do
  • unbind the "Jettison all cargo" control
  • don't bind anything (permanenetly) to the space bar, as that one defaults to the "enter" command in basically all menu situations. Otherwise, you're asking for confusion
  • don't try to find a workaround to put anything else besides "screenshot" on F10. That onoe is hardcoded

So-so. The T-8 has more cargo space and fits on a Medium pad, so if you want to sell to (or buy from) outposts, that's a killing point. On the downside, the T-8 still is a cargo hauler at heart, so it comes with small hardpoints and a very small power distributor. Unless you want to throw a shipload of Arsenic and Osmium at Torval Mining Ltd. for some pre-engineered mining lasers, the PD will run dry before the astreroid does.

If you're choosing to go mining in a medium ship, you've already decided that you think speed and agility is more important than cargo capacity.
In that case, you might as well lean into that decision by using the most suitable medium ship... which means Krait or Python.

Conversely, if you're considering a T8 because it'll allow you to collect more ore in one go, lean into that choice and pick a T9 instead.

Personally, I have a Krait as my "Deep Core and a bit of laser-mining" ship.
IIRC, the Python is slightly better, in terms of slot-capacity, but I prefer the view out of the Krait cockpit (in VR, especially) and I've always liked the way the Krait handles.

Also, the humble AspX makes a very, very good little all-rounder mining ship.
Dirt cheap to buy/equip (Cr25m vs Cr100m for a Krait), can carry all the mining toys and defensive weapons, agile enough for DC mining (with DDs) and 64t of cargo.

If you would like help in game, you're welcome to contact me within.
Once upon a time i helped new players get their space legs.
Several of those players are still about, so i must have done something right.
