Old Timers guide: help us Obi One you're our only hope.

So, reading the posts to get some insight on how to best play/avoid issues I have been searching for the best starting path to this game. I am aware to start with some small trades etc but that's not what I am looking for.

Question: what is the best path for ship development?
should I upgrade my starting ship or should I continue to save my winnings for a better one later?

Many thanks in advance to whoever responds.

Dont upgrade, sell your ship buy a Hauler, trade, sell Hauler buy a Cobra and then upgrade. After that keep your ships and buy when you have enough

Personally I don't see that I would go back to anything below an ASP

Do went Sidewinder Hauler and then went adder Cobra lakon 6 ASP. in each case I sold the previous ship

I now have two ASPs - A fighter and a trader and am kitting them out for the roles

I'm a million Creds off a type 7 when my Asp trader will be sold

I'll next buy an Asp Explorer/miner

As an Edit if I went again I don't think I would go thru an adder I know al lot of people like it I didn't that's whats good about the game

you did not posted what ship you are in now, but i suppose you are in little sidey.

If you want to trade, then earn enough credits IMHO this way: hauler -> cobra -> lacoon type 6. Then you will for sure know what to fly next

Depends how you want to make your money. Doesn't take too long to make 100k cr in a Sidewinder. Either upgrade your cargo to 8+ units and do a few trade missions, or do some combat. There's no fixed "best way". :)

If you want combat fly to a planet with rings and drop into the resource extraction sites and kill the pirates. If you want trade missions you can find them at the local stations.

I've flown in highly upgraded Sidewinders. They can do most things.

I've never flown a hauler for more than a few hours, I find them a bit pointless.

i can only tell you what I did. Sidey to hauler for a while to make some cash with haulage missions and trading. Also had my free Eagle and spent cash upgrading that as a bounty hunter. I haven't earned anything like the cash some people have because I have spent time playing the game and enjoying myself!

Upgraded hauler to adder and equipped it for mining. Upgraded Eagle to Cobra and equipped it for more bounty hunting and some exploring. Traded rares to make a reasonable credit balance. Now I'm concentrating on storyline type missions, getting involved in the nefarious activities of Fed/Imperial authorities and trying for an Alioth permit.

Plan to buy an Asp and equip it for serious exploring, but that's a long term goal. I'm making money, but not very quickly, neither bounty hunting nor mining are vastly profitable, but I prefer to do what's fun, not grind for its own sake.

Take advice, but make your own path. That's the philosophy of Elite.

See you in space, commander.
