I have a freind who I've just told about ED and he's both over the moon and disconsolate at the same time.

His rig is a few years old and he can't afford to upgrade as he's an old age pensioner. So now to his rig - can it run ED at any reasonable level?

Pentium i3 2100 @ 3100 :eek:
GTX650 1g :)
8 gb ram :)
Windows 7 :)

I've told him the rest is fine but doubtful on the dual core processor.

I know there's been some discussion about the machine specs needed for the alpha test, as we're approaching the first build delivery I can share some of the development specs of where we are at the moment. Optimisation and performance are obviously ongoing tasks and as more features are added through the alpha and beta periods we'll need to keep revisiting it.

To play the first build released in December we're currently looking at the following:

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System Ram (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU, 1GB video RAM(my reasonably low end machine has a GTX 285 with 2GB)

As I say we're looking to try and reduce the spec if possible through detail options and optimisations, so the final min spec for the game should be lower than that stated above, but for the initial alpha tests you'll need to be in that range.

Edit: Minimum video ram spec updated to 1GB.

However thats not to say a 2 core will not run it, its just below minimum recomended spec.

Do any alpha testers have a 2 core machine to try it on?

Mine runs the alpha on max settings and its getting on a bit now, I have a mk1 striker xteme MB, an intel Q6600 and 4gig of RAM, graphics card is more up to date though have a GTX660

That i3 is only two real cores, but is hyperthreaded, to give 4 running threads.

It incidentally scores a higher CPU passmark than the Q6600:

Q6600 passmark: 2972
i3-2100 passmark: 3609

So perhaps there's a good chance that your friend will be able to run E: D with some of the graphics options turned down.

The GTX650 could probably do it, but I'm not sure if the fact that it's only 1GB is going to be a problem.

Not all have put their observed FPS for everyone to see though.

What I can see there is one with AMD e350 & HD6310 (integrated), running at 1920x1080 :)eek:), getting 1-18 FPS in Alpha 1 (/1.1).

Now both the i3 & GTX should outperform those above, combine that with lower resolution (such as 1280x720), he might well get playable (but maybe at times a bit choppy) E: D experience. You don't happen to have Alpha access, so you could try that PC with your account (installing on multiple PCs is ok, if you only try to run one install at a time)?

Adjusting a few graphical options makes a massive difference to the fps such as the turning off Vsync and lowering the shadow quality and antialising without harming the look of the game too much.

Shadows do really need to be on high though as the asteroids look very white, they could do with darkening them automatically when the shadows are on med/low.;)

Just had a look around, there are certainly fairly cheap options if your friend wanted to replace that i3 with say a faster i5.

He'd need a socket 1155 (FCLGA1155 or LGA1155), and a more recent gen i5 like the i5-3470 3.2 GHz could be bought second hand.

Example went for £70. Might be worth phoning a local computer shop or checking Ebay. New, they are about £135.

I'd still not completely count that i3 out of the picture though. Probably need to run a graphics benchmark and see what the results are.

Thanks for that it looks as though at this stage its a borderline affair and my friend may have to buy/download 'on a wing and a prayer' :(

I'd just slap the Alpha on it and see how it does :)

The e350 system is mine, it's just a media playback machine these days but I was curious how Elite would run on it - not very well at all :(

I had an 8 core AMD for SteamOS, but got fed up waiting for a non-Nvidia build and sold it to a co-worker. I was kind of hoping to eventually run Elite on that too and add the results, but too late :(

I run 1280 x 720, and it looks fine with everything turned up high, my CPU is running at 2.4 at the moment although I am waiting for a new cooler so i can OC it up to 3.2ish.

It doesn't seem to have any problems with the game at the moment I think the GPU is taking most of the strain although CPU meter does indicate all four cores are maxed out, RAM sits about 75% used.

The first PC I bought (a Viglen) had 256Kb of RAM (and a 10 Mb hard drive). I paid extra for 256Kb - it only came with 128Kb as standard. It came with Windows 3.0.

I later upgraded the HD to a massive 40Mb.

My first PC was a second hand Olivetti 286 with 1 meg of ram and 20 meg hard drive, it too had Windows 3.0.

Then I tried the Doom demo and was blown away completely :eek:

Checked out the full game specs and forked out $250 for a 4 meg ram stick so I could play it - WOW $250 was a lot in 1990 but Doom was worth it :D

i dont know if youll be able to play it, but look im kinda broke and i dont have money for another pc :D

and you know what it rolling now ?

i have a pentium 4 HT at 3,4ghz with 2 go of ram... using an amd radeon 7570 HD card.

and still, this is able to play call of duty MD2 online without much lag.

so i was to a trial...

maybe it can run elite dangerous... yeah it wont be at ideal frame rate , but still ill see. no i dont have money for the alpha but i was really looking forward playing the game, cuz i simply loved elite frontier ...

the fact of having a entire galaxy to visit, each planet is unique i mean wow ! :p

but got problem with drivers now... so i wonder if this ol pc can undertake the challenge !
