OMG - my first 4 hours ever of ED - im shattered!

I consider myself a mature gamer, ie not a run and gun at 500mph type. Games like ED should be perfect for me. Its quite slow paced (but captivating) and I feel its quite a ‘mature’ game. My 12 yr old will hate it thank god.

But the problem I have, (and I admit this is my lack of experience with the game) is the ultra steep learning curve.

I had my first 4 hours with it last night and did the training missions (bar the expert combat one). I found the training missions to be general guidance rather than informative. I was often left wondering what the heck im supposed to be doing and how to do it. This meant constant ‘restarting’ until I realised theres a comms panel which has all the last talk in it. Same with trade missions, I had to go through every button and combination I could find to see where im meant to be going etc

That aside, my biggest issue if landing/docking the blooming thing. I have all the assists off and im like a learner driver trying to parallel park. Once ive actually managed to find the station im supposed to be at (no mean feat!) its purely down to luck whether I can get through the letter box or look like a drunken idiot bashing into the sides.

Landing on a pad is equally as bad. Ive got the cross hairs thing down good now but im often rotated at 45 deg. Is there a rotate control (ie spin on the horizontal). I end up rolling or yawing, crash into the sides, hit r1 by accident and plough into the side of a tower or something.

Ive found myself trapped inside landing cages like a sprat flapping aimlessly in a fishing net, ive found myself wedged ‘under’, yes UNDER the side of a landing platform and I just pray to god other players aren’t watching my attempts as its cringe worthy.

Im going to spend a hour or two watching You tube vids to see if it answers my questions.

My final issue is when I space (I cant hit anything there). Theres so many boxes and triangles on the map that I struggle to find where im meant to be heading. Ive resorted to ignoring the map and spinning my ship around and hovering the cross hair over anything that pops up to see if it’s the right one.

Oh… and last night I did a basic mission to collect some grain. During an FSD thingy, I overheated for some reason, almost blew my ship up and when I eventually docked at retrun station (after 20 minutes trying to land on a pad) I find my grain cargo is missing. I assume frazzled in my bizzare overheating moment.

I fear 99% of this is down to my incompetence but boys it’s a hard game to get good at

I feel with you, it's similar for me.

I've decided to use flight assist at least until I have a good knowledge of the other aspects of the game (so eventually I'll use it forever :p).

I started creating a sheet where I put all the hints that I got from researching (probably at least 50% of my gaming time is reading stuff in forums etc). I'll share it later, perhaps it's useful for others as well.

Hehe, actually for Docking/Undocking and all normal flight - keep them on all the time (outside Combat, which is its prime use), unless looking for a fun challenge when more experienced ;)

FA off flying is the thing I guess it learned mastering last, would have absolutely killed me if I tried to master that in my 1st hours :D

IMHO getting comfy with the Controls and building "muscle memory" on it is the most important thing during the first hours.
Once that is down cold, one can start experimenting with general FA off maneuvers or fancy an FA off/Rotational Correction Off Station landing or departure.

Ow, boy, this is pretty much EXACTLY how i started playing. lol.

Keep at it CMDR, you can't learn the game before you know how to screw up big time.. and you almost got that covered.

See if i can give you some tips.

Docking: You fly with with Flight assist off? Even for the most experienced pilots this is a challenge. I suggest you dock with flight assist on. ;)
Also, not sure what you mean with the 45 degrees rotation, but, its just a matter of lining up your ship with the hologram cross-hair and descent till the magnetic landing pad connects with your ship. Also, with spaceports, your ships bow should always point to the back of the station. With outposts, always to the buildings. So if your bow is pointed to the blast shields, you are doing it wrong. This is the same with planetary outposts, and stations.

Map/Radar: the best way is look at your left panel, third tab, this is your contacts panel, in it, you find all the things in your surroundings within range. There you can select the object, or NPC you want to target. Now if you look at your radar, the selected object will have brackets.

Overheating: Makesure you dont charge your FSD to long above the surface of a planet, or near a star. It will heat up your ship, and eventually it will cook you form the inside out. Your thrusters need to work really hard above a surface to keep your ship airborn, therefor it will heat up your ship. Now in combination with a FSD charge, well.. you will pop like popcorn.

Near a star, well, you are near a star. lol. Make sure you lineup first to your jump destination, and then charge your FSD.

Never be to shy to ask CMDR, we are here to help!

Cheers.

Hmm, maybe I have flight assist on. Im not sure. Ive just gone with the default it gave me. Im sure when I go to one the million control panels I have to split my eyes over, it says 'assist off'.

I'd really like the docking one on if there is one but that's just another tick box or button lost amongst the minefield.

Then again, is it not just delaying the pain till later?

How to verify the condition of FA off/Rotational Correction :

Right Ship Panel -> Functions
ELITE-FA_Off-1.jpg

HUD Displays whenever FA off is set, by Default also gives Audio Message when toggling on/off (Rotational Correction does not display in HUD, AFAIK also no Audio Message... long time since I've tried fiddling with Rotational Correction)

No, "Flight Assist" is pretty much used by everyone all the time, especially for docking. I have it set to toggle, and occasionally turn it off in combat, or when positioning myself for the slot. I boost at a point about 6k in front of the slot, use FA off to aim at the slot, and then boost at the slot while turning FA back on when I'm properly aligned.

To be honest, I'd be really really impressed if you were landing FA off inside 4 hours. You may well have it on.

Thanks for that. This may sound strange but ive actually seen both of those on my time last night. Ive certainly seen the first pic while docked in a station and fiddling with the controls to see what they do, but ive also seen the big red 'assists off' in the top right.

You'll have to forgive me, its so much info to take in all at once

I have been playing on PC since release and still don't fly everywhere with FA-OFF its just not particularly useful. I use it in combat to gain an advantage at times, but the biggest skill is learning when and when not to use it.

Not using it to land is foolish.

No sweat... I remember when I started during Pre-Release Beta Testing (PC), I spent no less than a full week and multiple attempts (!) just to setup my Flight Controls and figure out which Inputs were important/served which purpose in-game.

That just takes time and quite some persistence/patience to get it all down, completely normal :)
It pays off big time though and is a very gratifying experience learning and getting better at it every day.

No excuses needed - we've all been there (and at many other points - come back again when you boosted into the station's back instead of lowering your landing gear, or dropped all your cargo instead of opening the comms panel....).

Back to your problem: yep, entirely possible. You probably have FA on/off bound to one key or another (pity that the reference sheet generator doesn't work for PS4), so when you press that button inadvertently, you're switching between FA on and off. Try not to hit any buttons by mistake, that might have interesting consequences (like, when you hit "retract hardpoints" instead of "boost" while engaged in battle....).

I don't know if there is a misunderstanding.

Like 99% of CMDRS fly with flight assist on, no beginner should turn it off.

Learn the game, then once you have it down experiment with FA off.

FA isn't "training wheels" or similar, it is literally a mechanism that's required so a human can fly the ship.

Think of it as something like auto-stabilisation on drones, or the computer assist on the Eurofighter Typhoon where the plane is next to unflyable with it off.

Some very skilled ED pilots do fly FA off, but there is something fundamentally wrong with these people. :)

Tip for finding an object / Station

Select it in the left Nav panel, then follow the little compass next to the radar. remember solid dot it in front, hollow dot its behind you. easier then tracking the selected object on a busy radar.

When you say all the assists off, have you turned rotational correction off, i really wouldn't advise that one
