OMG!!! New rift user

My Rift arrived yesterday and hooked it up quickly last night (purchased a sidewinder just in case to try it out!) To say I'm blown away is an understatement. I suspect I have more "tinkering" to do with the settings to polish the experience more. What I'm having trouble with is getting used to the newly mapped buttons on my Hotas, after using keyboard for some actions for the last 2 years.

I cant believe I didn't purchase one of these before now and I'm sure I will be back with some questions in the future.

the only downside of vr is imo it means certain types of game you just wont enjoy playing outside of VR from now on.

Elite is one of them.

The new game in Elite will be the.... Constantly looking around you game. So many new details to discover in VR. The SRV is super great to look around. And..,,,everything else.

One of us! One of us!

I had a lot of hours(200+) into Elite before I bought my Vive. It was like a whole new game after that...

On that, try this:

Load up the SRV training mission, land the Razor, deploy the SRV, park the SVR right next to the ship, exit the SRV by standing next to your seat and look up. You'll probably just stand there for 10 or 15mins.

Does that make a difference in the rift ?

I tried it a couple of days ago but it didn't seem to affect anything.

POV is locked in VR for obvious reasons.

Yes... You actually start to feel a touch disappointed at times. It's those darn shipyards, you see, they are cutting corners. My Python has cables snaking across the floor behind the pilots seat to a console a bit further back. Across the floor! Seriously? They could not have hidden them under the floor panels? Sheesh...

I actually looked at those cables last night and there is a thin, very translucent covering over the cables in question.
Well for the python at least.

But yeah it seems Falcon de'Lacy shipyards doesn't take cable management very seriously.

Star Citizen doesn't support VR IIRC, therefore it's a no go for me. Shame, because some of it looks quite good.

indeed. i backed Star Citizen as they were positive about VR and even mention it in a stretch goal. Alarm bells were ringing after seeing them do every VR "no no" in the book.

despite having access to the game, i have no interest in it, i cant remember the last time i fired it up.

the notion of, we can patch in VR at a later date does not really compute either. if VR is to work well, the design has to be considered very early on. Star citizen looks like a good game... probably just not for me however sadly (a bit tempted to get refund tbh)

Get voice atatck as well, that way you can still use the KB for all no combat actions, plus its really cool to say

" <ship computer name> landing gear down please"

" <ship computer name> retract cargo scoop"

Or even

"<ship computer name> Engage" to super cruise or jump :D

Made everything look closer (or bigger depending on how you look at it) for me. Didn't get any sense of the field of view being restricted though. I was having an issue with how small the gap between the info and comms panel was on some ships in VR. Setting FOV to minimum helped a lot.

That sounds to me like the IPD has changed rather than the FOV. Very usefull if that's what it does.

I heard about SC just after ED, but otherwise don't know much about it. But I'm sure it's designed in a 3D environment. Why can't you just lock first person view and play in 3D? Sure, in the demos they always switch to the lousy 3rd person view, but sitting in ships or turrets in SC doesn't seem much different than sitting in ships and buggies in ED. Anyway, have they actually ruled it out? If so, I'll ignore any further reading about SC.

Btw, I love ETS2 and ATS in VR, and I don't think they were designed for VR either and are just beta patches. Sure, it could be better, but VR still blows the doors off of a monitor, with or w/o head tracking.
