OMG this game needs a codex! (or something)

Edit: I'd just like to add that this isn't something I feel would be quite essential for launch, but do think it'd be needed sooner rather than later if this game is meant to keep newer players emotionally invested.

I have no idea if this is already a planned feature.
I'm seeing a lot of people complaining that this game has no soul.
That could be interpreted in many ways but I'm guessing that means they see little of the overall context that the universe is set in.

Who are these three empires?(/political entitities)?
How do they REALLY differ from eachother?
What is their history and what has caused things to be the way they are today?
Who are all these companies I'm seeing adverts for in stations?
Why should I care if people are suffering on Eranin (or any planet)?

There are dozens and dozens of questions that are important to really FEELING this universe, and the answers absolutely exist... but not INSIDE the game. I need to leave the game and read web sites, or a book, or tons of forum pages, or play previous games in the franchise to glean some of this (IMHO) incredibly important information.

My proposal is a Mass Effect-esque codex that serves as a repository of history/info or (hitch hiker's) guide the galaxy if you will. VO the most important parts and have the rest purely as text. Or have it all as text, whatever, but please, some of us want to really get into this universe without having to scurry around in so many disparate locations.

I know the forums are ablaze with other concerns right now but please, I'd like to 'hear' other people's thoughts on this.
The universe is vast, but I feel this is one of the things that would help fill it up and make it great.

You are correct, the information is spread through several location is several parts. There should be a compiled wiki that is associated and certainly more on ther web site. We can Hope/Assume this will start showing up after the 22nd.

I've proposed this myself in the past.

The lore is all there to be found, but you shouldn't have to go hunting through websites to find out what is the background story of a game you bought.

There's a lot of Elite fiction if you read any of the newsletters... books, that sort of thing. Maybe check those out.

Indeed, I read all the news letters.
My point is that they're a terrible location for such lore, rather than inside the game itself.
There are hundreds of thousands (/hopefully millions) of future players out there, and the vast majority will never read a news letter or forum post, or read an Elite novel.

I hope there will be a digital manual for the game that contains some details about the lore. Some info about the different factions, the Thargoids, the way humanity expanded into the galaxy... Basic stuff so we know what's what.

Does this one come with Michaels novel? I think my kickstarter pledge covered it, but do people who buy the game get it or is it a separate purchase?

Just in case you didn't know they First Elite back in '84 you got a full Novella with the game.

I'm also aware of that. The information essential to understanding the Elite universe definitely exists. My problem is that essential info should exist in some form INSIDE the actual game. I don't feel like Elite lore should be like Minecraft recipes. I don't think that would work quite the same.

I think this is a bare minimum, yes.

I'm not so sure where to put it inside the game, for the simple reason that I can't think of a way to fit it within the games UI well - maybe as an option that takes over the whole screen like the galmap does but that has it's own set of pitfalls.

However, collecting it into one place where newer players can get all the backstory that old hands are already familiar with would be great.

This is the kind of thing you save for the premier ;). There very little testing need to test whether a cut scene or two plays when it needs to. Hopefully they have produce an animation film that explains the history of the universe that is required viewing before joining the pilot federation and getting your first sidewinder. I'm hoping they have fill out planetary histories a little as the game continually evolve as well. There also the captain log that is meant to be coming hopefully that will add a bit more soul as well. Galnet should have a intelligence section which contains all the details.

It's not a bad idea, and I'm guessing there will be something similar to the Dark Wheel for release to lay some of it down.
In addition there is tons of info out there for free, just google it.
Also there are a lot of books, every one of which I've read so far adds to the lore and background. Great books, worth getting.

If there is truly a demand and gap for it you could always start (another) website dedicated to providing the info, or do a wiki for it or something.
