On Foot engineering materials without combat in 2024

So I don't like killing people. If I wanted to do that I'd play Call of Duty or whatever. I do like exploring all the Oddessy galaxy has to offer. Is there a (reasonably) fail safe way to gather materials on foot without having to combat? I've tried to repower abandoned settlements. It worked once. Most times there are either scavengers present on arrival or someone shows up to either fine then kill me or just kill me. Any help woould be really appreciated as I'd love to get my 7 year old granson into this part of the game but I'm definitly not exposing him to that kind of violence.

Thanks Again

There's a catch with current on-foot gameplay. With the exception of exobiology, it's ALL based in combat. So, even if you upgrade your suits and weapons, all you'll be able to use those upgrades it'll be for combat.
But, if you want some mats for upgrades nevertheless, feel free to send an in-game friend request and i'll happily sell some to you.

Post thargoid recovery systems with low or no population and abandoned settlements. Human encounters are not 0% chance, but are often very low, and for the most part, those encountered are visable from the air before you land; in which case move to another settlement and try that one again later. You may still find the odd scavenger while you are mid salvage, but chances are minimal in my experience.

There are non violent missions, which by definition require you to not kill anyone to complete them, although the difficulty level is likely going to be above what is fun for a 7 year old. Personally though, as post 2 states, you'd be better off sticking to the parts where you're doing something in a ship or SRV, or just wandering around a planet if you're on foot.

Maybe the interiors of fleet carriers and station concourses are ok, but given the this is still part of the PEGI 16 part of the game, I'm not going to say everything in there is definitely going to be age appropriate for a 7 year old.

Thx, but do no population systems have bases? How do I find them. Thanks again

Systems that have been liberated since last Thursday (check thread in Dangerous Forum) have abandoned settlements.
These can be powered up and salvaged without engaging scabs. There is a small probability of scavs dropping in so powering up the reactor ASAP is a priority.
If they do arrive you can usually sneak past them, just keep an eye on windows and exits.

Yeah I've been doing that. But I'm getting killed ALOT. Scavs seem to be there most of the time (or all the lockers are empty). Still thanks for eveyone's input. It's all good info

In case you didn't know, if you need to relog at a settlement all the chests, lockers and data ports will be empty. If doing a mission, only the quest item will still be present.

I would not recommend Your grandson to play the game for various reasons like: commonly used violence, murder and thievery- regardless of lots of blood being present or not environment is not suitable for 7y old human imho. Not to mention vile language used by NPC pilots.

I'm also one of those players who do not like killing, most of the time I like to run away from combat.

When I was collecting materials for suit upgrades my routine was more or less like this:
1. Find post thargoid recovery system
2. Check how many settlements it has, what types and how many of them were disabled (inactive).
3. Check if desired settlement type is present (the one with best chance to have what I need, google Elite Dangerous Materials Helper 3rd party tool- this has helped me a lot).
4. Take few missions for those types, see which settlements are on night side (with night vision mod those are easier to complete without killing).
5. Activate reactor with power regulator (so make sure to have at last one), sweep through base collecting what I need (and to see if like the layout too in the meantime). If the layout is nice - deactivate the reactor to reset mission and to reclaim power regulator- after this disembark in ship to ~15km in supercruise mode then land back to sweep items from the base again (mission reset->take off->supercruise mode->landing is a chain of events that will reset settlement). If the layout is bad -simply leave settlement with completed mission and check next one.

I'm quite sure You will encounter scavengers most of the time but if base layout is nice You can avoid combat or even getting spotted. Just make sure to park ship at last ~400m from the base and try not to use SRV (if it gets destroyed You will die too). I remember even running around base with sizeable tail made out of scavs but with some experience I was able to lose tail in buildings or when running on the roofs. If You feel vengefull you can always use SRV to take down scavengers from reasonable distance.

There is also one more tip: try to find G2 mav suit with night vision mod installed (usually planetary settlements since most of players avoid those- it is simply faster to land on station).
