On foot in missions how to open a map?

I started a mission to take some power relay from a building and took the space taxi (lazy me) but once I arrived am I just limited to guess work? it was pitch black night and I had no idea where to actually go for this item. Is there no hint at all? thank you

Access a terminal. You can bookmark locations in you HUD.

No, no map. If you find a Terminal you should be able to select buildings and highlight them on your HUD (only one at a time though). If the terminal isn't powered up, you can power it up using the energy transfer tool.

I've taken a couple of missions today, it doesn't initiate the objective when you arrive at the settlement for me at all any more..

It used to give the buildings and/or locker numbers in the top right corner to help get you started. But nothing anymore.
