Why do the items in my back constantly need replacing when I haven't used them...?

When I go to the Pioneer trader and look at 'consumables' I always need to replenish them (particularly grenades, which I hardly use at all)

How many do you buy? You can buy up to 99, but depending on your gear you can only carry a few. So it could be you have plenty but you will still be able to buy even more. Can you show a screenshot?

I'm not sure a screenshot will help; it will show that I need perhaps 2 or 3 grenades to Max out whatever category that is
(I've got plenty of credits, so the cost of maxxing isn't a problem, so that's what I tend to do)
My question is - why do I have to keep maxxing these out if I didn't use any at all on the previous mission (ie 2 or 3 seem to go 'missing')

Have you been emergency boarding without transferring consumables?

Metatheurgist: No (but this raises a question: when I return to the ship/SRV .. do I have to transfer the consumables back, or does this mean I lose them...?)

The stuff in your back pack is only dumped when emergency boarding, normally everything goes into storage automatically.
