Newcomer / Intro On foot mission - Restore a power regulator - Now I'm dead!

I took a mission to download data from a security port at an abandoned settlement.
First, I had to turn on the power using a regulator.
I did this, inserting the power regulator in the PWR building, and used the terminal to turn on the power.
Everything started to come online, and I settled in to wait for the (3 minutes?) until the power was back on.
Suddenly there were several of what appeared to be explosions, and I died.
Anyone got any idea about what happened....?

Well sounds like a rocket barrage or mine bombing. If you were in one of the starter systems in open it is possible. The goliaths do fire rockets but they aren't very good at hitting you on the ground unless they are around 100m away.

I was inside the PWR building at the time....

"Open game mode", they mean some other player could do rocket attack from ship.

Maybe it was the fire - have a look in your journal to see if it tells you the manner of death.

It takes about 30s to get the power back running. Much longer to turn it off.

And yes, it's maybe possible that you were playing in Open Play (the first mode, left most, when you start the game) and somehow you were followed or someone (another player) witnessed the power comming up and dropped a barrage of rockets on the PWR building.

Another scenario possible: you parked your SRV outside the PWR building. You powered up, NPC reinforcement dropped near your SRV and they exploded your SRV.
Thing is, SRV explosion is very powerfull and it has quite a huge radius - so it got you inside the building (which might be a bug or well intended)

I'm not sure to say this but I don't think you have to be in the building once the timer starts nor downloading information if you select those missions.
(Someone please correct me if I'm wrong with this information).

Being as you mentioned no NPC's I can only imagine a glitch or you needed to get out of the building before it hits full power (as the counter will still continue) and there is also decompression access on top of the building that will put fires out or make it so fire can not start. Doesn't matter if you decompress building first or not. Personally I would decompress building first with no NPC's in base.

Future advise, I do know if the NPC's are red they are looking around BUT not for you if you were not seen committing the crime so get out of the area. They will eventually turn yellow so you can begin to move around and they will scanned you as normal but you will not get in trouble unless seen committing the crime.
DO NOT RETURN TO THE SITE AS THEY ARE SEARCHING FOR NON-AUTHERIZED PERSONEL, when they turn yellow and will act normal and will scan you as normal.

But this type of mission is kind of like drop and run...lol (Again someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

You're not wrong. Once you activate the Regulator just leave and go to the data port with the mission target.

I usually activate the power, then turn it off again and go to download. The timer is long enough to do that if i dont slack around.
Saves the waiting time to recover the power regulator.

I usually take the time to strip the base of every mat and data, leaving the pwr building for last, i.e. after pressing the deactivation button, to kill time instead of wàiting.
