Vaguely remember the question being posited a long time ago...
Adopt the name "group" instead, because it's jargon/parlance in MMOs.
Have a Group get a context-specific name of "Flight", "Section", or "Fireteam".
In MMOs the parlance or jargon is "grouping up". You form a group.
And in WoW, a raid consists of multiples of these groups.
You only get to see the details of each of your group's members; you ned mods/addons for the rest of the raid.
If more then half of CMDRs in a group are in a ship, then the group would be called a "Flight".
If that's not the case, then if more then half of CMDRs in the group are in a vehicle, the the Group'd be called a "Section".
If that's not the case, then more then half of CMDRs are on Foot -- so you'd call the Group a "Fireteam" instead.
The naming of this would be in-line with the NATO Joint Military Symbology; see "Unit size indicators".
In the setting of Elite...
...the Federation is the far-future evolved version of the United State of America of today, with more military-industrial complex.
...the Empire is an offshoot of the early Federation by disgruntled citizens who wanted something better.
So it could lore-wise fit. I mean, NATO really is mostly the USA, with other satellite states joined in.
You'd expect the jargon to be standard amongst the superpowers in Elite, and have percolated to the independents as well.
