On my seeming constant disconnect with "The Forum"

This summer will be my fourth year on the forum and a little more than that in game and with the release of Odyssey, I find myself - again - at loggerheads with the forum zeitgeist. I have never in my life had such cognitive disconnect and seen such a disparity of what I am told is "happening" in a game vs. what I am experiencing.

For years it was the "Open is a gankfest and is ruining the game" rhetoric. At the time I was on XBox and I thought to myself, it must be happening on PC. Well, I migrated to PC a few years ago and I find myself largely unganked. Sure, there are seal clubbers and murderhobo's out there, but I see them very rarely...even in Deciat.

And now, it's reached a fever pitch. Whether it's demanding public apologies or wielding the word "refund" as a cudgel, the carping and shouting has just become too much. I keep seeing that the game is "literally unplayable." "FPS is garbage" "Cancer"...what have you. Even system chat is littered with people moaning. I can't escape it.

And here I am, on an i7, 16gb RAM, GTX 1070 several year old laptop and....well....the game is running just fine. Sure, it was a little stutter-ish in the tutorial during the firefight, but it was certainly playable. Not a single Orange Sidewinder, nothing. I don't particularly like the UI, but I suppose it's more that it's just different than anything else. Although it did take me a fair few minutes to work out how to put a stored module back on a ship.

Obviously, people are having issues. I don't think they're making it up...at least I hope they aren't. To be frank, I can't help but think a lot of this is self inflicted. If Horizons was already running poorly on your machine then maybe that's why Odyssey is a slideshow. And how that is anyone's fault other than your own is beyond me.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the point of this post is now that I'm several paragraphs in, other than to say that I like Odyssey and I wish people would simmer down. So much strong language is being thrown around and I think we are forgetting that there's a human presence behind all this that must be taking a beating. I've bought my suits, done a few missions, and am largely pleased...I guess I'm just sorry that the rest of the forum isn't.

Largely in agreement with you. Honestly? I've only run into two issues with Odyssey: I had to lower my resolution from 4k to 2k to get the framerate moving smoothly again (I'm on a GTX 1080 ti, so this isn't something new for me). And I've been having a bear of a time figuring out how to switch between using my Virpil HOTASAS setup in the ship, and my keyboard and mouse on foot, with desk clamps in the way.

I'm sorry but this is a bunch of bull right here. During alpha, we reported in every phase that the game runs poorly, has trouble with texture loading, keeping a solid frame rate, is rendering things it should not. We were told it is just an old build. Release does the same damned thing.

Self inflicted? Horizon running poorly? I'm looking at 110 fps+ vs. 21 to 19 in the worst case. I even lowered the settings and it changes nothing. It's not just people with below recommended hardware that are having problems. I'm fairly sure my 2060 is stronger then a recommended 1060. And yet it has problems on High in 1080p.

I mean, if you think the 66% of steam reviewers are all in this situation because of them, you're in denial.

I mean, the people who say cancer, wish death upon the dev, or general bankruptcy for Frontier are very bad individuals. But they are issues, period.

I've seen enough of these posts that I'd almost be tempted to download Odyssey just to try it for that two hour window. However with my Internet, downloading 60+ GB is quite the affair, and I just know that everything will be unstable for the next week or two as Frontier sorts things out for the people who are having problems. So I'll wait until the dust settles down (which will likely coincide with the big Steam Summer Sale) and grab Odyssey then.

In the meantime, I'm poking bears on both sides of the fence, just for fun. Odyssey may not be playable right now (for some), but the forum certainly is ;)

Call it whatever you wish. I was in the Alpha, as well. And with each phase, I noticed improvement in frame rate. Release, on my machine, is even better than Alpha. I have no idea what my actual frame rate is, but I'm running 1920xsomething or the other on Ultra and it's just as smooth as Horizons ever was.

just because you dont have problems dont mean other people dont. you should stop preaching .because people dont like things you do

I don't disagree...there are issues. But then again, "Steam reviewers," right? Is the issue with Steam or FDev? I use the stand alone launcher....no issues. I did have issues getting it installed through my free Epic alt...but those were Epic issues. Are people conflating the two? I don't know.

CTRL+F is your friend, ED has built in fps display.

Also fun fact, Alpha Phase 4 had better performance then release.

Well, I'm not one to classify a part of customer as a "subclass" of people. Even when I strongly disagree.

I understand you come here to share stuff and it's rather toxic ATM. I get it, and for what it's worth, you have my sympathy. But it's not even like Fdev foster it's community. They gave stations to influencers, but not to the one behind Inara/EDSM and others.

People going to far ? Yes sure. On both side. People having a right to complain on issues ? Yes to.

I didn't play Phase 4 much so I'll take your word for it. I'll CTRL+F tonight when I'm on and see what it says.
Just to understand my disdain, at first it seemed it runs just fine. 60-70 on ground, sure, half what I'm used to, but still okay. But then today I visited a bigger settlement and it went to 21, no matter if I was inside a building or outside. That is insane. Then we went to a CZ with 3 people, and we all pulled out, because it went into uplayable framerate territory. I had 19 fps. That is not acceptable on a machine over the recommended setting in 1080p. At least not for me.
