On Ship Naming...

So I'm curious about the proper use of "The" at the beginning of a ships name.

I couldn't find anything on proper vessel naming standards with a quick net search.

For example if you wanted to call your ship Argos, would it be referred to as The Argos?

In Star Trek, we refer to The Enterprise
However the hull is just says USS ENTERPRISE. Is that because of the USS pre-fix?

If some one names their ship Maul. It sounds weird to say they are flying The Maul.

At the same time we would say he's in The Dawn Treader. Not that someone is in Dawn Treader.

Thoughts?

Hehe interesting.

I have no idea, but I'd assume it's just a natural development of language that likely dates back to times of war and the notion that a general would have many ship.

So say having 3 ships of the same class, well give them individual names, which really is just a method of being a bit more specific when identifying them.

And then when you are really just using phrases similar to "can you get THE car" but with an identifier that works given the context.

"Have THE Enterprise turn about" is clearly going to be more understood than "Have THE ship turn about".

I'm trying to figure it out for naming my ship.

I've found some more info. "The" at the beginning is known as the definite article. Some papers say it shouldnt be used, others say it's fine. I guess it's what sounds or looks good.

Sorry to disappoint, but "the" is simply what they call a definite article. Used before singular and plural nouns to identify one member of a group. 'The thief' as opposed to 'a thief'.

I think the only dissapointment was that I didn't make a negative complaint thread ;)

Yea I found several papers on the definite article specifically referring to ships. My specific question is do you add it to the title on the hull?

The US Navy says no way, but could be accepted with civilian vessels.

What does the Pilots Federation think?

I wouldnt. You use 'the X' to refer to a specific ship called X. You dont write 'the' on the hull, just X.

I think people just add the word "the" to a ship's name as an informal gesture.
You'd say "We're sailing on the Argo" in the same way you'd say "We're going to the shops" etc.

There's no need to actually bung the word "the" in as part of the ship's name.

The real question is whether ED ships should have an "official" prefix.
"FSV", perhaps?
Frameshift Vessel.
