On the subject on naming

Since we've got the whole station naming deal going on, I figured I'd put this out there:

Have you ever heard of the name-a-star gift tins? They're very popular around Valentine's day and Christmas and such. Basically for around £20 you can get to name a real star in honour of someone. Once sending off for the certificate, the entry then gets added to a database, apparently accessible via the public library.

However, I thought it was quite sad that the star database they maintain is not actually the official star catalogue. The stars as of yet don't really get officially named after anyone. Perhaps this will change in the future and both databases will be merged but I don't expect it's very likely.

I thought it would be quite a charming gesture to integrate this database into the Elite Dangerous galaxy. You'd still have to buy the gift-tin to appear on there, but why not? There are plenty of stars for everybody in the world many times over and it'd add significantly more exploration destinations for people.

Thoughts?

*Sorry, I should have read your whole post 1st.. I get vexed by these companies and jumped to the wrong conclusion 2 lines in.. your idea is more meaningfull, there is only 1 elite dangerous although i cant see the reason for integrating an outside database into the game, also can you imagine a commander entering a virgin system only to find he wont get credit for naming it as someone has paid for it.. that i can see being a big big issue. Was a nice thought though and sincere.. so +rep for that at least

Sorry to be a kill joy, but the truth behind the 'name a star' gift tins and their like, is a let down.. Ive been shouted at by people for telling them truth about it. You dont actually get to name a star, it will only ever be referenced by the name you pay for, in the database of the company that offers the service.. its a sweet thought for those that get led in, but ultimately its a rip off! Most folks name stars as a way to commerate something important in their lives, these companies are taking advantage of them. :/

Thanks man Yeah, you know I think I'd actually buy a tin for myself, just to go and visit my own star!

You dont actually get to name a star

Yeah I know dude. That's why I think it'd be cool if they did mean at least a little something: Name a star in ED.

Although... naming and discovery are 2 different things arnt they? maybe there could be some mileage in that idea of yours.. id probably be up for paying to name a star in game.. can imagine lots of folk would.. if it didnt stand on too many toes.. could be worth a poll? and its another avenue for game funding...
