There are a few quick middleware solutions for clouds and atmospheres. They could plug in SilverLining:

But I suspect FD wants to roll out their own thing - for better or worse. It would need to be incredibly flexible to cover all atmostpheric types and still work seamlessly from space. And up close we still want the godrays, cloud shadows, moisture on our windshields, etc. They set the bar fairly high with some early concept art showing massive clouds and lightning.
