One BIG question, from a total ED newb.

I just bought this game a few days ago and after some initial frustration regarding how to accomplish tasks I have to say it is pretty good. I have missed games like TIE Fighter so much and nothing has ever come close to that experience, until now. So yeah, I like it, especially its size and unforgiving nature but... There HAS to be a but doesn't there?

Why are there no capital class ships? Why are there no fleets with destroyers, cruisers, battlecruisers, carriers, corvettes... and so on. Where are the massive battles between fleets of opposing forces, Federation vs. Empire and whatnot? Again I must go back to TIE fighter (damn I'm old) and remember what it was like to take on whole fleets of Rebel capital ships and fighters alike. That was two decades ago, don't we have the technology to do it even better now? Surely there must be a way to implement this into the open play, say a random system where you can find this epic battle for 24 hours, players chose a side (like the warzone and conflict zones we have now) and have it until one side loses all its capital ships, or some other key objective, and then it resets the next day in another random system, the name of which is given through the Galnet news thingy. I know the game is in somewhat early stages of release but has this kind of thing even been talked about at all? Am I the only one that feels this is missing?

Forgive me if this has been touched on before, and even if it has I think it is something that really needs to be addressed. I dont pretend to know the ins and outs of software programming, but it sure would be nice to take my Viper and strafe the hull of a large capital ship that takes a few seconds to run the length of, all while corkscrewing away from point defense weapons on its hull... Maybe I am asking too much, but I sure hope not.

At any rate, I AM enjoying the game for the most part, it just feels like it could so much more epic with a little innovation and some boats to match the size of the sea if you know what I mean.

The game already has what you are looking for. In high intensity conflict zones the Federation and Empire send out capital ships which are as big as they sound. The only downside to them right now is that you cannot destroy them. All you do is disable their weapons and then they run away to repair before coming back:

If you think the weak combat zone mechanics in any way answer the OP's point (fleet scale battles with, saints preserve us, tactics) then you are sorely mistaken.

Time will tell if Wings holds any answers. I highly doubt it.

The OP asked if there are capital ships in the game, and I answered. Yes the combat zones are weak but again, hopefully that will be addressed in a later update.

Along with that, I sometimes wish the enemies would throw more ships at the capital ships. Fighting in a high intensity zone and enemies coming at like 5 at a time vs 10+ ships and a capital made it really easy. (But my bank account and freshly upgraded viper had no complaints)

Well, tactics can hardly be in place when CMDR's don't have any military control. The game does do big battles quite impressively, though, it can get very crowded and hectic. Good, fun stuff.

Having read the reviews on 1.2 I highly doubt your doubt.

I have yet to try any conflict or warzones, I just bought a Viper and am slowly kitting it out as I earn money and don't want to get in over my head and lose my ship. It takes me a long time to earn credits since space is for blowing stuff up and I REFUSE to trade grind. I will most definitely check the conflict zones out when I get some better equipment though. Does anyone like the idea that an entire system could become a conflict zone for a day?
