One button FSS - without manually adjusting throttle to Zero first

No idea why it popped into my head to share this today, as I have had this setup for a long time now, but it just sort of did. I am sure I am not the first to come up with this, though I have never seen it actually posted anywhere before.

One of the QoL things about the FSS is the fact that we have to set throttle to zero in order to enter the FSS. That typically involves either zeroing the physical throttle, or hitting the Zero throttle key or button, and then hitting the button to enter FSS. After a bit of poking around, I figured out how to make it a single button press to enter FSS without even having to zero the physical throttle.

My personal control setup is a vkb gunfighter III Space Combat stick and a Saitek X56 throttle. I use one of the mini sticks on the throttle to enter and exit FSS. Initially, I tried to map the same button to both the FSS and secondary Zero throttle. Well, it wouldn't let me, said it was a conflicting bind. So I decided to see if I could fool the system and force the conflicting bind by going into my Custom Binds file and manually adding it.

First thing I did was set my Zero speed primary key in the game, which was still the default X. I then mapped the secondary Zero speed to the button I wanted to use for my FSS. I left my Enter FSS completely unbound. At that point, I went into my keybinds file, copied my secondary device mapping under SetSpeedZero straight into my ExplorationFSSEnter section. Saved the file. Went back into the game, and viola! I can now enter FSS without zeroing my throttle, or having to hit multiple keys or buttons. Another nice part of this for me, is that when I exit the FSS, I am back to what ever my throttle setting was whern I entered it.

Standard keybind location for non steam version (no idea if steam location is different):

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

<SetSpeedZero>
<Primary Device="Keyboard" Key="Key_X" />
<Secondary Device="SaitekX56Throttle" Key="Joy_23" />
</SetSpeedZero>

<ExplorationFSSEnter>
<Primary Device="{NoDevice}" Key="" />
<Secondary Device="SaitekX56Throttle" Key="Joy_23" />
</ExplorationFSSEnter>

Have my FSS put on the key next to X. After a few drinks it's just one keypress aswell ;)

For the FSS is it just a toggle to enter/exit it or can I also bind exit FSS and full throttle to just one key?

Oh,
... and viola! I can now enter FSS without zeroing my throttle...
Edit this into the title to have some fun with this thread :D

It is two different keybinds. One to enter, one to exit, so I imagine the method I described above would work to make exit/full throttle one key. I always enter systems at full throttle on my physical throttle, round the star, hit the FSS, while my physical throttle is still full throttle, and when I exit FSS, I am still full throttle, so no need to bind keys for that.

Yep, figured this out before the fss even released. Was able to bind "set throttle to zero" and open fss with the X+LT combo on my xbox.
Was never even a problem.:cool:

Ah, cool. I'm using keys for throttle while in SC hence my analoge stick is at zero throttle.
So a full throttle / exit FSS on one keybind saves me one... Never thought of that, Thx! :)

I mean you could. Personally I'm so used to sitting where I entered the system facing a neutron star or white dwarf while I use the FSS now that I would have several embarrassing crashes before I taught myself not to do that any more....

I have always entered systems at speed, stay at speed and veer off center to avoid the exclusion zone and fuel scoop. Prior to the FSS, I would only scan main stars under very specific circumstances.

If you're using Mouse+KB, consider buying a keyboard with programmable buttons. I had a Logitech G105 until it broke, and now I have a Corsair K55. Both have six extra keys just for programming. Set one to send 'zero throttle; open FSS'. Boom, done.

My other keybinds are:

G1: Switch between Exploration and Combat modes
G2: Send keybind for discovery scanner (holds the keypress for 5 seconds)
G3: Zero throttle; FSS
G4: Target next system in route, go to 100% throttle, start jump
G5: Variable, depending on my needs
G6: Open/close camera mode

Hm, that's a pretty good idea. Thanks! And not only could you use AutoHotKey for this, but you could also put it on a joystick button. Although personally, I quite like the physical act of moving the throttle to full, but even without the throttle setting, it's still something to consider.

Since I have a HOTAS button mapped for next system, I'm pretty used to hitting it and the hyperjump buttons as I move the throttle, so I don't actually need that one, but it would be super handy when playing with fewer buttons, on a gamepad, or with keyboard/mouse, definitely.

I don't remember who brought it up the first time, but mapping a "zero throttle" to the same button for opening the FSS came up here back when it was in beta, and I've had it mapped that way ever since. But we have a lot of new explorers who don't know the tricks, so it's worth bringing it up from time to time too.
