One chance taken too many, my tale of woe

Loving the game up to now, despite a few faults and bits that need some filling in so this no kind of complaint about anything in relation to the product or its producers.

I am a person who reads about those losing millions due to not having enough cash for insurance and thinks "Well, that could've been me but it hasn't happened yet, happy days." Sorry for the person concerned but it was avoidable, take the knocks, get back on the horse and be a better person and improve your experience of Elite: Dangerous by learning from your mistakes.

I have upgraded to the next ship leaving myself pennies to trade with and nothing for insurance so many times I am just used to it and consider it a entirely my own fault if I crash and lose everything but I have been fortunate in that respect so far.
I have run all sorts of risky smuggling missions with only the smallest of fines, the biggest being my own fault when I docked in a station and then accidentally launched rather than entering starport services and I got scanned leaving the station. Once I even survived a collision in my Cobra with a Python that left me with 1% hull and relying on 7 minutes life support to get home through an asteroid field in which the incident happened and carrying no fuel to jump anywhere but the system I was in. Granted, I got to the station with 45 seconds remaining only to hear the words "Docking request denied" repeatedly until I blew up but that little accident made me laugh more than anything else and only cost me a handful of bounties and the insurance. Up to now I have basically laughed in the face of fear and tweaked Thargoid's noses. Well, I would if they were in game yet haha.

Today, however, my turn came to regret some stupidity on my part although it hasn't left me severely financially worse off, just really annoyed for a while at the people responsible, mainly myself but also one other party.

I left my main ship parked and went out exploring in a hauler. I flew 400ish LY to visit Jacque's station in HIP 110620 first of all and turned in a bit of exploration data there. Didn't find anything of further interest, only 1 tonne of rare item available so I figured, what the hell, I may as well go out exploring for a while. I survived a large number of npc interdictions on the outward journey, one of which was during collecting some fuel and resulted in my temperature getting to over 250 degrees and meant I lost 47% of my hull but I persevered. I took a break to eat, endeavouring to be a bit more careful going forward. I had visited about 120 systems, best guess, and got to 1k LY away from civilisation when I decided to call it a day and flew home. A couple more interdictions left me at 37% but I had home in site, just a few more jumps. Sure, I could have landed at one of 15 or so systems to turn in the data (1 earth world, maybe 15 water worlds and lots of gas giants scanned, probably 15 systems solely visited by me at that point) but I figure why not turn it in at a friendly place so I get to the system my Clipper is parked in, just the 400 or so LS to the station to go and with only 1.2LS left....Aaarghh, curses, interdicted and no message...damn, a real person in an Asp, oh no....

They started messaging me and firing and all I could do was panic and try and accelerate away in my wounded ship. The end result was my death due to totally losing my head at that point. They did ask me to stop and await further instructions and presumably if I had done I may have survived the encounter since I was carrying zero cargo, zero cargo racks in fact but sadly all I could think was "Fleeeeeee!!" So I died. All I could do at that point was pull my woolly hat over my eyes and sit in silence for a couple of minutes.

Now, I know there are those who will say such thing as I shouldn't have travelled home in open play or I could have used the zero throttle exploit when interdicted but I don't believe these things to be in the spirit of the game. I take chances and I get punished if it goes wrong, hey ho.

What have I learned? 1. Safety is best if you risk losing several hours play. 2. Don't expect other players standards, behaviour and expectations to be the same as your own. I wouldn't personally have bothered to interdict and attack a CMDR's badly wounded Hauler but it does not mean that others would think the same. You cowardy custard. 3. Try not to panic. 4. When your wife says "It's only a game" it is not a good idea to throttle her.

Apologies to my killer, if my message calling you an imbecile got sent more than once it was cos the button got stuck, honest :)

(this written from Her Majesty's Prison, Preston)

Only kidding, I didn't kill my wife and I am not in prison although being stuck back at Jacque's station in the bloody Hauler does feel like it when your home system is 400 LY away.

So, time to get back on the horse.

I love this stories, although they are tragic (from a certain point of view) it only adds more depth to the game in my opinion. Safe travels CMDR :)

Funnily enough when I was flying my old hauler towards Dawes hub in Achenar with 2.2mil in exploration data, I also got interdicted by an Asp doing a stop and scan. I boosted away when it looked like I wasn't winning the minigame and bought a couple of seconds to tell him I was an explorer. Then I let him scan me, he wasn't exactly going to find anything, and we just left no harm done. You're right when you say panicking was the wrong idea, it helps to always act like you're in control of the situation, even (or especially) if you're not.

Very true, but I did once encounter some people from HMP Kirkham on some release arrangement on a night out in Chorley. Likewise, I would rather have stayed in the nick. I was only there changing trains.
