I've heard that as well as going into signal sources, going into a conflict zone and picking up the scraps from the carnage is a way to gather materials.

Yup, scanning ships in normal space or SC, scanning data points, entering various signal sources, mission rewards, stealing loot from other destroyed ships...it's all good
