One more annoying bug with WMR software and ED, losing Target function

OK, I've got workarounds for most of the problems I've encountered switching from the Rift to WMR's Dell VR headset. But one very aggravating one I haven't found a solution to is losing the function of the "T" key, target the object ahead. It's very difficult to get it to work while WMR is running, but when I unplug the Dell VR headset and run ED in normal monitor mode it works just fine. "Next Target" works fine in both modes, and I can always select a target from the Nav or Contacts screen. I've remapped my joystick button "target ahead" to a throttle button, I've even flipped up the visor and pressed the "T" key on my keyboard. Nada. Sometimes it works but not often. I can't imagine what's interfering with this function. I could try mapping "target" to something other than the "T" key, that's about all I haven't tried.

And I still can't start the game in VR unless I use EDProfiler/Default VR Profile.

I've done a number of Google searches with no luck, but I did see the next update of WMR will allow direct launching of Steam Apps from the WMR home site.

Not sure what the issue is. Just got my Explorer and it works fine, you just need to look at the target before hitting the button. is it just ships or also USS?

A little of both. If the USS doesn't have any text with it I can't target it, but if it does then I can. Last night I spent some time in a nav beacon and it was damn near impossible to target someone in front of me. It would sometimes target someone at the edge of my screen instead. I'm going to unplug the Dell VR headset and play on the monitor and see how it does. I also need to try a different ship, I've been running just Chieftain/Challenger since I installed the Dell. I may even go to the hassle of reconnecting my Rift and see what happens when playing on that. I paid $220 for this refurbished Dell and also got a 4yr warranty for just $5. The new Samsung looks pretty good, and I want to see some reviews on the 5K+/8K Pimax from ED players and also find out what they'll cost for non-investors. I'm sure it'll be middle of next year before non-investors can even get them. It's pretty bad I have to run several 3rd party apps to get ED to play in the Dell vs. just running Oculus and launching ED from my library.

OK, I tested the game with the Dell WMR visor, just playing on the monitor with the plug pulled on the Dell, and then with my Rift all plugged in (WMR software not running). Here's what is happening: When you point directly at a ship or object a small diamond shaped bracket forms around it. Then u click the "T" key or assigned Joystick button and it targets that object and gives u the info. Playing on the monitor and on the Rift that worked just fine. On the Dell WMR Visor it was very difficult to get that diamond shaped bracket to appear. When it finally did I could target the object with no problem. I left the station and tried to target a number of ships flying around station space. No problem at all except when using the Dell.

I've pretty much decided to get a refund and avoid WMR. I leave town tomorrow for 17 days and my return time may expire by the time I get home. I'll check with Amazon to be sure. I'll miss the flip up visor but it's just too complicated to get this VR headset to work correctly.

Edit: I checked and I have until Nov. 17th to return it, I'll be home the 8th or 9th so plenty of time. I'll take it with me to where I'm going and keep working on the issues. If anyone has a clue why it's so hard to target an object PLEASE let me know.

I use a lenovo explorer and never had any problem.

I have a gaming laptop, I'll see if it can support WMR VR and install it on that. As of now the game is really hard to play with the Dell. Something is throwing off my targeting aim, although when I do get a ship targeted I have no problem hitting it with weapons. I'll also make sure I close down all 3rd party apps that I can to eliminate them as the culprit.

Found the problem. I uninstalled this Open VR Advanced Settings add-on app for SteamVR:

https://github.com/matzman666/OpenVR-AdvancedSettings/releases

No more targeting issues. I was hoping it was something that simple. I had installed a couple of 3rd party apps trying to get ED to launch in VR before I remembered about EDProfiler. The other app I installed was "Revive", it lets you use apps in your Oculus Library on a WMR Headset. Didn't work for getting ED to run in VR, but it does run my few other Oculus apps like Roller Coaster rides and stuff.

I was just going to say I hope you managed to fix the problem. I *just* started using VR today, and had no trouble with targeting. I use an HP WMR headset. Glad you got it resolved, though.

P.S. OH MY GOD ELITE IS AWESOME IN VR!

The trick with my WMR headset is I have to look at the target with my eyes to get the diamond bracket for targeting. I can turn my head and look out the left window and target a ship there.

I may still return the WMR due to the Windows software, not the hardware. I pretty much have it running OK while wearing the VR, but when I play on the monitor I have to physically unplug the Dell WMR device. During the game I will occasionally get a sudden pop-up "are you sure to want to leave" yes/no. I quickly click "no" but the game shuts down anyway. If I unplug the VR this does not happen, but it's a hassle to reach the back of the computer to unplug it. I may look for a software method to disable the headset, perhaps with Device Manager. I really, really, like the flip up visor. My Rift is a lot less hassle on the software side but doesn't have that feature and doesn't quite look as good with ED. And if you have a Voice over IP app like Teamspeak starting the WMR app causes the playback source to quit working, you have to reset it. Annoying but not a deal breaker if not for the other stuff I mentioned.

Ah, see I play using an HP WMR. The flip up visor is the only way for me, because I wear glasses, and it just slides right over them without issue. Any other device is going to interfere that way.

It might be worth checking if power management is disabled for the headset both in windows device manager and SteamVR settings.

Things are getting better with the Dell WMR headset. When I play on the monitor I can disable the Dell in Device Manager which is a lot easier than reaching around the computer and unplugging the USB. Then the WMR software won't run and screw up the game and Teamspeak. Tonight I played on the VR for several hours with no issues. I did find a registry edit that stops the 15 minute time out on the VR headset. That was annoying to come back from break and find the game shut down. And I know when I startup the WMR software I'm going to have to reset Teamspeak. Hopefully MS will fix that bug, or Teamspeak will.

Next I may start to tinker with the settings. I've got an i7 with a Nvidia 1070 GPU and may upgrade the card. My computer should be able to handle a 2080Ti if I decided to spend that much. I don't know if I should adjust settings using ED Profiler, or the WMR software.

I like the flip up visor so much I'm going to pass on the new Samsung Odyssey+. It does not do that, it has some kind of "flashlight" feature you need a hand controller to use for.

Actually, it is a feature that was incorporated into the latest Windows update for all WMR headsets.

That's nice to have, but with 3 monitors it's a lot easier just to flip up the visor. Sometimes on the transactions menu when I click "open galaxy map" it doesn't take me to the correct system, especially if that system is close by. So I have to manually type it in. Flipping the headset open and having room to wear my glasses (Tri-focals) makes things like that very easy. I'm going to check with my Optometrist and see what'd it cost to get glasses made with the middle settings only since that's what I look thru when wearing the VR gear. The Rift doesn't have room for glasses, however there are companies that make custom inserts made to your glasses prescription. Not sure if that's available with all the different WMR headsets.
