One thing is for sure no surface prospecting is required for fueling carriers!

Ok remember what FD said about carriers? That they will be available to non-Horizon Players? So how are they (non Horizon players) going to refuel their Carriers?
That still does not rule out surface prospecting being an option - personally, I would expect asteroid mining to be the primary source of ingredients for the fuel but surface sources could also be available.

Probably the same way non horizon players get materials like iron, chromium, etc. I would not be surprised if it's still more efficient gathering this material on a landable planet, than mining in space.

I didn't say anything about mining , I said surface prospecting meaning on the surface of planets (to clarify)

Do you know why?
You think carriers being available to the base version would stop Frontier from forcing you to take a shovel and go digging some crap on the moon surface? I think it would be perfect in a combination with space legs. Wanna jump your carrier? Don't waste time, go digging!

Thank God. I hadn't thought of that, good thinking. One less reason to space buggy and spend more time in my space ship.

It's all a bit of a blur but I seem to recall information saying that there'd be an entirely new element which'll be required as super-fuel.

Given that there is a big hole in the Raw Mat's table, it seems likely FDev might plug that by introducing one of more new "G5" raw mat's rather than, say, by scooping maguffin-dust from neutron stars or whatever.
Course, the bad news, there, is that if the new mat' is a G5 raw mat' then chances are it'll be just as hard to obtain as other high-tier mat's - otherwise you'd be able to collect heaps of it and trade it for every other raw mat.

Personally, I don't reckon Carriers will interact with planets in any way.
No gliding down to the surface or gathering fuel-mat's from the surface.
It'd be nice if the fuel was available from Bio POIs but that'd cause people to moan that it's easier for Horizons owners to get fuel.

Put that stuff together and it seems likely that the fuel-mat' will be something that's found in rings or asteroid belts.
Hopefully it'll be asteroid belts, just to make it easier to find.

All just a stab in the dark, though.

Why would you use a solid fuel for the carrier? Especially as normal ships in this game use liquid/gas fuel (hydrogen).

Gas giant scooping confirmed?

I'm not saying Fdev couldn't make a stupid decision, just that, game wise, it'd make sense for all ships to require similar fuel. And, if they do make a new 'super fuel', normal ships should be able to access it too, and maybe it gives a better jump range.
