One week on... Elite Dangerously INCREDIBLE :)

So, it's been exactly one week since i took my first steps into Virtual reality with the CV1.

Initially i was concerned that my relatively low spec machine wouldn't do Elite justice. current setup is an older i7 2600 CPU, 16GB memory, GTX970 GPU. I had to slot in a USB 3.0 card, opting for the Fresco Logic 4 port card that was recommended on the oculus site. 20 quid of Amazon.

So the first steps were the usual freebie experiences on the oculus store, dreamdeck, showdown etc and I was truly amazed.

I set up all the graphics in Elite Dangerous, the recommended settings from various excellent forum postings and all i had to do was then set up the display to HMD.

In all honesty, I cannot envisage a time where i'll actually play Elite Dangerous in 2D ever again. OK the resolution is nothing like the Ultra HD i was used to on the monitor but now i feel like i have my particular set up perfect for what it can handle, changing the HUD helped enormously and God rays are a thing of the past in my opinion with the green HUD.

NB: i bought a roller coaster simulator thingy off of Steam, only around 4 quid or so, my other half won't go on them. Watching her in the rift going on one of those things was worth the investment in itself. HA HA.

Even with my 'far from a beast PC', Elite is just gorgeous to play IN, not play, play IN.

I've only just started Horizons, so i have the added benefit of learning that, along with getting my head around playing Elite in VR. I headed off to Sothis, and spent the whole day just ferrying data missions back and forth, getting used to plying in VR and setting up all my binds that enabled me to do everything with the HMD on, (bar typing in a system name). As a side bonus, I got 2 promotions for my Fed rank, now at 80% Ensign. I'm not a grinder and the rank grind thing certainly doesn't appeal. it will happen when it happens.

At the end of the session, i'd load up with hydrogen fuel, biowaste and head back in, making a good few million after every session.

The ASP explorer is a totally amazing ship for VR, the view is incredible. I've parked the ASP up for now and got into my Anaconda, the immense scale of this ship in VR took my breath away, i felt like i was piloting a Star Destroyer. it's something that you just cannot get over to 2D. I've spent the last couple of days just getting a few engineer mods, i don't know exactly what i'm doing quite yet, but i have plenty of time to research what works and what doesn't. i'm not a min-maxer and not hugely into PvP so i'll just work out as i go.

I had a few flights in my other ships, an FAS and a Python and by far the ASP was my favourite to fly, purely because of the stunning view, above, below, and all around. I plan on staying in the Annie for a while, just to get as much engineering mods sorted before i move on to the rest of my fleet to mod.

ANyway, side tracked, After spending a week in the Elite universe using my CV1 on my relatively low spec machine it is safe to say, that for me personally, the Rift was a fantastic investment. I hardly notice any major SDE now, and for anyone still flying with the default HUD in VR, i urge you to change it to the many flavours of Green, it really IS that BIG of a deal when sharpening up the text. With some tinkering of the graphical settings it will amaze.

I also, like Alec T have put in an obscene amount of time on Luckys Tale, what an astounding little game that is. Another great little game for the small people is Farlands, my grandson loves it and goes in every day to feed, explore etc. other notable Rift experiences so far have been Apollo 11 and damaged core for a little blast action. I had a bit of a blowout on various other games which I haven't even touched yet. Project Cars, Adr1ft, Redout, Chronos, Solus project and Windlands. My VR gaming is pretty much sorted for months and months. If only i could tear myself away from Elite Dangerous!
