I suppose if you just truck around the hot spots that could happen. I'm almost always in open and haven't had a negative player encounter yet.

But the nice thing about Elite is that there are private modes to play in! It's not a typical online PvP game!

You have the chance to run into some bad eggs and unlike NPC's they can ruin your day..

If you don't want that to happen then you can go to plenty of areas, its a big galaxy.

the only chance you can encounter players is if you go the very frequented systems like planet earth and etc, since its popular, there might be more players, but most of the places its hard you'll stumble face to face with another player.

I play online mostly in Private Group servers with a few friends.
There are also dedicated PvE groups you can join. (See groups thread)
Open definitely has a much greater risk of encountering obliteration, but it's not all bullyboy tactics.

I have only ever played in open, I think I logged into solo once just to test it back in beta but yeah...

OP - As for your 'assumptions' that can happen in certain systems sure and only really if you do not have the skills to deal with other players...

That said, I have not really found open to be full of griefers, full of mindless prats wanting to shoot anything that moves etc... There are some commanders that way inclined sure... but the majority I doubt play that way... Also, space is big, really really big, you can be in the colonised systems and rarely see another commander if you choose to...

Since release date I have only had 5 PVP battles with only one ending in my death.
Most of those were fair or at least not unreasonably unfair fights.
Apart from that I have had 1 pirate encounter and only 1 encounter with marauders
intent on murder. All of these occurred around the Lave area.
Really its not a lot of PVP interaction and certainly not a kill fest but that is just my experience.

Except that there are people camping in the starter systems and looking for newbs :) Basically, start in solo or be prepared to anything.

Same here. It can and does happen but it's not really a regular thing. Since beta I have been interdicted by 1 honest to god pirate, 1 bounty hunter and randomly ganked about 3 or 4 times. Not too bad considering all the hours I've played.

If you visit hotspots like Lave or community goal systems you're more likely to get into PvP but elsewhere not so much. For instance I recently did Dastardly's trade route 60 something stops, entirely in open, saw lots of players and nobody bothered me.
