Congrats on your new Status.

I am trading my way towards Elite having got Tycoon some while ago (Currently 74% of the way towards the elusive Elite).

Current Trading Profit (since start) is 848,688,782, so still some way (300Mill) to go. :-(

Money has nothing to do with combat, it's a background points system based on kills and the ranks of your targets compared to your own.

Please explain me why I gain rank progession for handing in combat bonds and bounties then.

The % update is slightly delayed by a few minutes. You might have left the RES and killed enough stuff to gain 1% but it didn't update until you docked.

I didn't get my promotion to Elite until about 5 minutes after I sold my final load of cargo. It popped up while I was down in the hangar screwing around.
