Looking at Thargoid behavior so far I think what we encountered so far are nothing but drones. The small ones on the Thargoid sites are minding their business as long as we don't provoke them. They repair and do whatever they do. I think same goes for the ships we saw so far. The are scavenging, collecting data and other stuff, including escape pods. They are minding their business until provoked or disturbed in some way.
Since Thargoids are insectoid I think the ones we saw so far are nothing but workers, like in an ant colony. We don't know why they came to us now, but there are multiple things I could think of.
- They might still be recovering from the virus we gave them back then and gathering stuff on autopilot to rebuild.
- The less hostile race is at war with the hostile one and driven into our direction (Wagar's book points into this direction). Drones first for scavenging and rebuilding.
- There is nothing left of them but mindless, scavening drones... (Nah, I don't think so...)
- They are scouting, looking for a weakness (I don't think so as well because they could just squish us anytime)
- Their swarm is reaping the galaxy for resources and what we see now is just the beginning of the plague of locusts...
- looking at the probes and artifacts and things we can do with them at the site implicates that they are somehow trying to contact other races. But perhaps these devices are just remains from a civilization long gone and the Thargoids we encounter are really just mindless remnants scavenging on because nobody can tell them otherwise.
Also I still believe Thargoids in general might be the offspring of the Guardians' slave race. Thargoids seem to be made for conflict, endurance in space, survival in general. Also they are all female (those we met, again, perhaps this is because their drones are female). So far they have all the traits of a bioengineered race gone wild after their creators vanished (or have been vanished...). Also explains them go aggro on Guardian tech. I can also imagine the Guardians once kept the Thargoids at bay, preventing them from spreading all over the galaxy or something (thus Guardians). Also, we could be the remnants of their slave race... screw evolution!
Well, if what we encounter now are worker drones, I wonder what their warriors look like... Let's hope there are none.
(Thanks to Frontier, by the way, for not just creating an enemy to have war with. I love that the whole Thargoid thing is still so controversial even after we have close contact now)
