[OoC] Accents

Hello!

I find that having an idea of a character's accent helps me to visualise them better and hear them in my head as I read. For example, when I write as Marra, I hear her having a Persian accent. Deggie's is Russian and Raffi, Marra's short-lived love interest, had a Spanish accent.

After discussing this with Matt, I'm really interested in what everyone's take is on the subject.

Do you hear your characters having an accent?
What kind of accent is it? Is it your own, or a totally made-up one?
How much do you think accents have changed 1,000 years into the future?
Matt mentioned that the station announcers give us some good clues.

I'd love to know what you reckon :)

Well, I think that everyone here knows that Matt has just a trace of American midwestern twang!

And it's funny... I always heart Raffi "speak" with an islander, Barbados-type accent.

And as far as future accents- from a realistic perspective, I would fully expect them to be a thing. But as a writer, I'm sticking to what's commonly heard and understood today!

I have been advised not to listen to the voices in my head: No matter who I may think they are.

My voices are more about, tone and register.

Well since I've always hated my voice in real life because I sound like a dying cat when I speak, (Neon_Raven twitch chat can confirm this :p ) I tend to think of my Elite self with a more... Japanese anime schoolgirl voice...

Okay that's a lie. In my head I sound like my avatar Lacus Clyne :D

EDIT: As far as others in my RP I kinda think of Jackie sounding like Taylor Swift, don't know why. Lana I kinda picture having a softer tone than but very similar to the imperial station controller lady. Jin, well like my brother Jin, Vince and Shane are based off the same person in my real life so they sound the same in my head, which is kinda like Chris Evans but with a more southern US tone. And my OS Amy sounds like Ivona's VA voice Ivy because... well that's what she is.

The whole system of Lugh has an accent:

My own,...err, Mack WInston's accent. People have told me my speaking voice sounds a bit like David Bowie's so I'll go with that. (Sadly, the similarity ends there. I don't have a good singing voice...) The typical accent of someone who grew up on Azeban, Eranin.

Cal Vazquez, he sounds pretty much like the Imperial station announcer. The typical accent of someone who grew up with a well-to-do family in Capitol, Achenar.

There aren't (yet) many recurring characters since most time is at the moment spent aboard the ship, but Station Deputy George Oppenheimer sounds a bit like (and shares some of the the mannerisms of, especially when the above pair have screwed something up again) Captain Hollister of Red Dwarf, although physically he's taller and less fat than Hollister. Oppenheimer is a native of Kappa Fornacis, which has only recently joined the Empire after the East India Company moved there.

Mack Winston's friend from the LHS 331 days (Kelly Price) and her husband Jason have accents that somewhat resemble Scottish Highlands (although Jason sounds closer to Glasgow). They are both native to LHS 331 (not far from Alioth), but since moved to LHS 3447.

There's going to be a few more characters from the Empire show up when the Baron Ascension shindig in Synteini happens later this month...
