[OOC] Images

It's hard to miss that several of you have some nice images of your characters in various settings, so far I've noticed:

* Xeknos
* Marra
* Simon Datura
* M Lehman

all have various CG images created including their own character and sometimes others, in various situations.

What software are you all using? I've had a look at Make Human and a couple of others, but to do anything worthwhile seems to require days worth of work in Blender, a skill I just don't have and unfortunately I don't have the time to acquire it. Now I could always wait for the commander creator to arrive in Elite Dangerous itself (at which point, making some good images from within a ship's cockpit should be a lot more straightforward) but given the delay to 2.1, that may still be 9-12 months away at this stage. Currently I just have a "placeholder" image on Inara.cz, but I'd like to make something better but preferably without needing to spend 100+ hours doing it.

So what y'all using? Any good tutorials on the software you do use? How long do you spend making an image with it?

A lot of us use EVE's character creator.

The client is free to download and you can set yourself up with the 14 day trial if you want to have a go at it :)

I really hope Elite's will be just as good if not better!

I tend to begin with Google searches of suitable images, and then alter them according to the story's needs. I try to blend existing Elite screenshots with grander sci-fi art to create a richer fictional universe than what the game engine offers by itself.

As far as portraying my own character goes, I hardly ever do so. IMO, Matt is the least interesting character in my stories- but he runs into some real doozies from time to time, and they're the ones who get the graphics love!

I use a combination of Eve, Elite screenshots and various backgrounds sourced from Google or other games with similar enough settings. Then I blend them together, with love, in Photoshop.
