[OOC] What gets you in the mood to write / RP?

Hiya fellow fanfic writers and RP'ers! :)

As per the title, what puts you in the mood and gets your creative juices going?

Playing the game?
Reading?
Watching films / TV?
Music?
Emotions / senses?

I'm curious, because sometimes I can be triggered off by any of the above and there's other times (like today) when I just can't get anything going!

How about you?

You might be surprised when I say this but, other roleplays. Playing the game does help but with Elite on it's own I don't think my own role would be as far along as it is.

Seeing others come up with far more amazing plots and tails of their adventures really helps. Which is why when there's a slow down on the threads, my personal stuff slows to a crawl.

All that said, I can work way faster if I've got some anime playing in the background. Doesn't matter what anime as long as it's got action in it.

For me it's a mix of music, reading other fanfic and playing different games (not just Elite, some other games give good inspiration for different situations, too).

Is it weird to admit that I get greater personal satisfaction from writing about Elite Dangerous than I do actually playing it?

That being said, playing does help get me in the mood. I probably need to buy a VR headset once they become available, because I spend more time than I should just "looking around" inside the cockpit. It really helps me get inside the Elite universe, and makes me wonder what fictional Matt would be doing or thinking in that moment (probably hoping that the "get up and walk around" season isn't too far away :p).

There's also exposing myself to the sources of inspiration that have helped shape and influence the Reaper Diaries. They are, in no particular order: Jim Raynor, Kerrigan, and Tychus from the Starcraft games, everything from the Firefly universe (including elements of Mal going into Matt), anything written by Robert Heinlein, Star Wars (for Han Solo and space battles), The Fifth Element, Edison Trent from the Freelancer game, and a myriad of other things.

ED doesn't really inspire me all that much.
I've found music to be my biggest inspiration, the "poetic and really disturbing" ( ;) ) thread I have at the moment comes from when I listen to emotionally stimulating music compiled by pandora journey ( eg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqE4goWTvyw ).

Well if I didnt know it before, I do now. Every forum has their 'oddballs', those people that dont actually fit within the forum, yet are active within it, this would describe me.

I dont actually write RP stories of my own, yet I like reading them. I spend most of my free time looking for inspiration and ideas that are RP related, that I can then use in a RP way. Hence my friend Jake on the left, just one of many idea's I've tried out.

As odd as it may seem, I spend quite a lot of my time being a beta tester of different ED related tools, beta testing is quite interesting as I'm kinda geeky, but I do this also because some tools have the potential to be used in an RP environment. The ED game mechanics are quite limiting, more like restrictive actually, which makes adapting most tools for RolePlaying extremely difficult, if not almost impossible.

So, to answer the OP, I generally play ED now-a-days to beta test new software tools and to see if I can include them into a RP envionment. I dont watch much tv, have way too little time for any of that. I generally listen to classical music when programming as I find it less distracting than other forms of music.

Thanks for the replies, they're very varied and interesting!

And we get a good deal of varied and interesting fanfic and role-play because of it ;)
