"Oops, all clones!" hypothetical

So, a quick hypothetical. Frontier decided to make an animal pack DLC with no theme and no number limit (within reason) called "Oops, all clones!"

This DLC is basically meant to get a bunch of clones out of the way for about $10

What would you put in? Like what are the most useful animals that can also be made relatively cheaply?

Since this is an all-clone pack, why not make it double-sized? And sticking to the most reasonable clone animals that would actually take minimal effort:

  • American black bear (Formosan black bear)
  • Eurasian gray wolf (Timber wolf--and change the existing Timber wolf to a specifically North American Northwestern wolf)
  • Bat-eared fox (Fennec fox)
  • Canada lynx (Eurasian lynx)
  • Tufted capuchin (Colombian white-faced capuchin)
  • Drill (Mandrill)
  • Eurasian beaver (North American beaver)
  • Wisent (American bison)
  • Dama gazelle (Thomson's gazelle/Springbok)
  • Bighorn sheep (Dall sheep)
  • American flamingo (Greater flamingo)
  • Green peafowl (Indian peafowl)
  • Nile crocodile (Saltwater crocodile)
  • Asian water monitor (Nile monitor)
  • Green and black poison dart frog (Lehmann's poison frog)
  • Painted terrapin (Diamondback terrapin)

Hmm... subspecies and other such super similar animals would work best obviously... maybe... something like this?
  • American Black Bear -------- Formosan Black Bear; there's a mod that does this and it seems to work just fine.
  • American Flamingo ----------- Greater Flamingo
  • Asiatic Lion ---------------------- African Lion
  • Boreal Woodland Caribou --- Reindeer; another "needs to be better defined" animal, they could redefine the current Reindeer as the Svalbard subspecies.
  • Eurasian Gray Wolf ----------- Timber Wolf; also redefine the current Timber Wolf as the Northwestern Wolf.
  • Gray Kangaroo ---------------- Red Kangaroo
  • Green Peafowl ----------------- Indian Peafowl
  • Grevy's Zebra ------------------ Plains Zebra
  • Masai Giraffe ------------------- Reticulated Giraffe
  • Perentie -------------------------- Komodo Dragon
  • Striped Hyena ------------------ Spotted Hyena
  • Sumatran Tiger ---------------- Bengal/Siberian Tiger; really should have gone with the Sumatran over the Bengal...
  • Syrian Brown Bear ------------ Grizzly Bear; another "should have gone with this one instead" option... this one over the Himalayan Brown Bear...
  • Utah Prairie Dog --------------- Black-Tailed Prairie Dog

Current lion taxonomy actually divides lions into northern and southern subspecies. The lion in-game is the West African Lion, which along with the Asiatic Lion makes up the northern lion (whose range once stretched across North and West Africa, across the Middle East into the Indian subcontinent).

Yes, I'm aware of that fact... but then, we already have the Bengal and Siberian Tigers, despite them now being classified as the same subspecies... what more, the in-game lion looks more like a Southern Lion if you as me...

I'll also echo a double size dlc because they would all be clones.

1. Wisent (bison)
2. Arabian oryx (gemsbok)
3. Arabian sand gazelle (thomsons gazelle)
4. Grey kangaroo (red kangaroo)
5. Bighorn sheep (dall sheep)
6. Mouflon (dall sheep)
7. Red fox (arctic fox)
8. Vicuña (llama)
9. Grevyi zebra (plains/grants zebra)
10. Masai giraffe (reticulated giraffe)
11. NA black bear (formosan black bear)
12. Bobcat / Canada lynx (Eurasian lynx)
13. Dromedary (bactrian camel)
14. Green peafowl (Indian peafowl)
15. Eurasian brown bear (grizzly bear)
16. Eurasian wolf (timber wolf, renamed Northwestern wolf with adjusted range)

I personally have 2 types of "samey" animals. If 2 species are related by genus, one is filler. If they're related by species, one is a clone. To summarize, here's a table of everything.

Now, I don't expect this to be an agreeable system, but I think it has strengths in being able to quantify "fillers" and "clones" as impartially as possible. I did add some asterisks to animals with genetic evidence that may shift their position (brown) or fully exclude from the table (black).
Using this baseline, I made a list of 15 animals that I think could work as filler or clone additions to the game. I also name the parent species in brackets.
  • African Forest Buffalo* (African [Cape] Buffalo)
  • African Leopard (One of the pre-existing Panthera, probably jaguars)
  • African Pygmy Goat (Alpine Ibex)
  • American Black Bear (One of the pre-existing Ursus, probably Formosan black bears)
  • American Flamingo (Greater Flamingo)
  • Common Wallaroo (Red Kangaroo)
  • Crocodile Monitor* (Nile Monitor or Komodo Dragon)
  • Cuban Crocodile* (Saltwater Crocodile)
  • Domestic Yak (American Bison)
  • Dromedary Camel ([Domestic] Bactrian Camel)
  • Greater Kudu* (Bongo or Nyala)
  • Przewalski's Horse (Plains Zebra)
  • Rhesus Macaque (Japanese Macaque)
  • Scimitar Oryx (Gemsbok)
  • Southern Giraffe* (Reticulated Giraffe)

American Black Bear (Formosan Black Bear)
Nile Crocodile (Saltwater Crocodile)
American Flamingo (Greater Flamingo)
Przewalksi's Horse (Plains Zebra)
Black Rhinoceros (Southern White Rhinoceros)
Red Fox (Arctic Fox)
Black Caiman (Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman)
Eastern Gray Kangaroo (Red Kangaroo)
Blue-Eyed Black Lemur (any of the other lemurs)
Southern Rockhopper Penguin (African Penguin)
South American Tapir (Baird's Tapir)
Masai Giraffe (Reticulated Giraffe)
Scimitar Oryx (Gemsbok)
Malayan Tiger (Bengal Tiger)
Asiatic Lion (West African Lion)
Dama Gazelle (Thomson's Gazelle)
Mexican Wolf (Timber Wolf)
Sumatran Rhinoceros (Indian Rhinoceros)
Dromedary Camel (Bactrian Camel)
Perentie (Nile Monitor)

There's new genetic studies out that re-validate the previously distinct subspecies. Amazing how fast science works when there's vehement disagreement 😛

I don’t believe there’s any research that supports lions and tigers being different genera.
Edit: I misinterpreted your question. I was referring to the tigers; there’s some evidence to re-split them into more subspecies.

I wouldn't go as far as putting twice the amount of animals, but I would increate the number to 10:
  1. Arabian oryx (gemsbok)
  2. Nile crocodile (saltwater crocodile)
  3. Eurasian brown bear (Himalayan brown bear)
  4. Tufted capuchin (white faced capuchin)
  5. American flamingo (greater flamingo)
  6. Massai giraffe (reticulated giraffe)
  7. Eurasian wolf (making the timber wolf a Mackenzie wolf)
  8. Perentie (Nile monitor)
  9. Iberian lynx (Eurasian lynx)
  10. Goitered gazelle (Thomson gazelle)

So we have: 2 reptiles, 1 bird, 1 cat, 1 dog, 1 bear, 1 monkey, 1 small hervibore, 1 medium hervibore and 1 large hervibore.

I decided on ten habitat and two exhibit species - I have also decided to only use clones of animals available in the base game / deluxe edition.

1. Arabian oryx: from gemsbok
2. Either Barbary or Sulawesi crested macaque: from Japanese macaque
3. Nile crocodile: from saltwater crocodile
4. Sumatran orangutan: from Bornean orangutan
5. American black bear: from Formosan black bear
6. Wisent: from American bison
7. American flamingo: from greater flamingo
8. Either perentie or crocodile monitor: from Nile monitor or Komodo dragon
9. Roan antelope: from sable antelope
10. Malayan tiger: from Bengal tiger
11. Guatemala beaded lizard: from Gila monster
12. Blue legged mantella: from Lehmann's poison frog

I'd also go with 12, 1/2 again the size of an animal pack.

1. Eastern Grey Kangaroo (Red Kangaroo)
2. Masai Giraffe (R. Giraffe)
3. Black Rhino (S. White Rhino)
4. American Flamingo (Greater Flamingo)
5. a second lion sub/species not sure which and I know there's debate on which are classified as which here, but I'd want a second lion. (West African Lion)
6. Nile Crocodile (Saltwater Crocodile)
7. American Black Bear (Formosan Black Bear)
8. Spotted Heyna (Striped Hyena)
9. Wisent (American Bison)
10. Bighorn Sheep (Dall Sheep)
11. Przewalksi's Horse (Plains Zebra)
12. Black Mamba (any of the snakes) - not an exact clone but since it's an exhibit animal, it wouldn't take as much work to do with a habitat animal. I'd say this would still count.

Although I find the odds of a “clone” pack extremely low, I think the idea is a fun exercise so I’ll list some ideas below.
  1. African Pygmy Goat (Alpine Ibex)
  2. Blackbuck (Any of PZ’s gazelles)
  3. Argentine Black and White Tegu (Nile Monitor)
  4. A smaller tortoise species, such as the Radiated, Desert, Red Footed, or Asian Forest Tortoise (Either Giant Tortoises)
  5. Sea Otter (Giant Otter)
  6. Przewalski Horse (Plains Zebra)
  7. Wallaby species (Red Kangaroo)
  8. Congo Peafowl or Pheasant species (Indian Peafowl)
  9. Honey Badger (European Badger)
  10. Gaur (African Buffalo)
  11. Vicuña (Llama)
  12. Darwin’s Rhea (Ostrich)
  13. Aoudad (Dall Sheep or Alpine Ibex)
  14. Pere David’s Deer (European Fallow Deer or Reindeer)

This is a great idea 👍 I think every animal model in the game could have a good "clone" choice.
It also could serve to show Frontier that there is money to be made from clones. Not as much as completely new and unique animals, in general, and I think a clone pack would definitely need to be marketed a little differently, but it definitely has merit.

There's not many I think are important, and what answers you get will depend entirely on your definition of a "clone".

I don't consider the American black bear to be a clone of anything in the game, for example. It's "bear-shaped", sure, but a clone?

I could say the Asian small-clawed otter as a "clone" of the giant otter, but I don't think it counts either.

The black-and-white ruffed lemur is about as varied as I think is acceptable, and even that has a lot more variation from its base model than I expected.

So for me, a list would basically be;
1. American flamingo.
2. Sumatran tiger.
3. Eurasian brown bear.
4. Steller's sea lion.
5. Humboldt and/or Magellanic penguin.
6. Tufted capuchin.
7. Asiatic lion and/or southern lion.*
8. Green peafowl.
9. Japanese badger.
10. Masai giraffe.
11. Grevy's zebra.
12. Eastern grey kangaroo.
13. Nile crocodile.

*I am aware of the accepted taxonomic status of the lion, however Frontier has chosen to go a step further and choose a genetically significant subpopulation. Of the genetically significant subpopulations of the Northern lion, the Asiatic is perhaps the most significant, given that it exists within a genetic bottleneck. However, the southern lion as a whole subspecies would more broadly encapsulate actual captive lion populations, as these tend to be non-speficic southern lions (i.e. hybrids between the various southern subpopulations).

Striped hyena
Somali wild donkey
Arabian oryx
Lion tailed macaque
Red fox
Scimitar horned oryx
Addax
Vicuña
