So, I might have gotten involved in a fight between a wanted type (not that I am wanted anywhere...) and a system authority vessel (in a system I am not wanted in).

In the process of killing the 'bad guy' the system authority ship carefully flew between me and my target and a single shot glanced off his shields.

Now this system won't talk to me (my standing is too low to obtain missions from the station). How on earth do I go about remedying this situation? If they won't give me missions with which to raise my standing - will hunting for wanted folks and destroying them have the desired effect?

That happened to me today, and I got a fine. So I flew straight to the nearest port, running away from the two 'enemy' security ships, and paid off my fine. I was in my Eagle (with no cargo capacity), but I can't remember if the locals were annoyed with me enough to not offer any jobs.

It might be a good idea to go to a different station in the same system (hopefully run by a different faction) or the next door system.

Depending on the wanted ships rep you might actually damage your rep more if their affiliated with the locals, although i'm still not 100% on the rep system
If your in a sidey near the beginning just clear your save

You can increase your rep by trading there or selling exploration data ... bounty hunting doesn't really seem to have much positive impact.
