Open is not so dangerous

After a few months off, I came back to Elite last month. Been playing a bit nearly everyday on the weekends and a couple times during the week, always in open. I noticed yesterday that the last time I ran into a commander in a system was October 24 and the time before that was October 4 and both of those times were in a headquarter system for a PP power. I have been doing rank up missions, so I am flying around to numerous systems, not just sitting somewhere mining or out exploring. I guess I do not remember the bubble being so, empty.

Other than Shinrarta, the engineering systems and some of the other major systems, seems like flying around in open is quite safe. Where is everyone? I do not remember it being this empty before.

Yeah. If you just casually fly around in space you will barely run into anybody else, pretty much like in solo. Then if you decide to go somewhere where you can expect to see other commanders, also expect ganking attempts. I just visited the inhabited generation ship a few minutes ago and was driven off by a plasma fdl (how creative) that started shooting at me. Passed through Deciat recently: ganking attempt. Last time I was in Shinrarta in open: ganking attempt, and this time by a full wing. It doesn't happen as rarely as many say, at least not to me, and not in the well-visited systems.
People like to say that we should avoid these places if we don't want unconsensual pvp. But then if I have to avoid all the lively places why bother logging into open in the first place? For the faint chance to meet somebody somewhere else? Whoop di doo.

I like open. I like meeting other commanders. But the only places where you will find them are also the places where gankers lurk. Really takes the fun out of it.

Went on an engineering tour for a new ship two days ago. Smooth sailing until I got to Wolf 397. There was a ganker wing of FDL and Mamba there. Submitted, high waked and decided to take a break for an hour. Got back and they are still at it. Submitted, high waked. Third time. I decide to practise fighting the interdiction a bit. Flying upside down in relation to him seemed to throw him off a bit, but I still end up submitting after a while. This time his wingman is right on top as well and I fumble the high waking a bit. They actually manage to get my shields down and take 6% off my hull. I decide to go to a private group so I can actually get the engineering done.
