"Open letter of thanks to Fdev for helping me rekindle my space interest, get thru two hard years of pandemic, & meet the man of my dreams" by Waho

Nice story :)

I think the general concept of online communities to meet like-minded people helped a lot of people get through the pandemic, and ED is one of those games where that is possible.

Do you have any commentary I can agree with or 'like' OP?

No commentary necessary - wholesome stories like this should be shared :)
Do you have any more?

I spoke to a Cmdr the other day that had returned after a long absence, they used to play a hell of a lot while they were at college & one of the things they said was that they lost an IRL friend & immersing themselves into ED really helped them get through some tough times IRL. They dropped out of college & became a truck driver (lots of demand for that atm) in no small part because of the relaxing feeling that came from 'trucking' in ED.

They said they felt ED 'literally saved their life'. Can't help but be touched by stories like that.

About a month ago I had a conversation (in-game chat) with a Cmdr who was also out exploring, I have a lot of names on my friend list because I tend to send friend requests to anyone who responds to an o7 Cmdr from me (I o7 any Cmdr I instance with if I get the chance).

Turned out they were Russian & we had a bit of a chat about the current 'troubles', including stuff like the lack of MacDonalds & how I (in the UK) was seeing higher energy bills etc.

He asked how likely he was to get ganked out in the black. Zero chance I said, unless someone is on your friend list they won't find you, and if they are on your friend list you'll see them coming anyway (possibly the reason he contacted me was because I was the closest Cmmdr to him on his friend list).

Anyway he was concerned 'western' players would hunt him down. I told him the only reason I knew what country he was from was because he'd told me :)

Online gaming can be a lifeline. Friend everyone you can, be in the game when you can. You never know when you might be someone's only point of contact in the world.

Another Cmdr contacted me a while ago (maybe a week? It was after the mysterious orange spiral blob was discovered), they are fiercely pro-xeno and I remembered their name as a player that popped a squad mate when we were repairing a damaged station in my territory, I negotiated free passage with them because we were not anti-xeno, simply repairing damage to a station that we cared about as faction supporters. Always good to chat to 'gankers', you never know when they are actually role playing rather than simply pickling weaker targets.

They were out near the orange blob, trying to prevent space tourists from antagonising the Thargoids & the anomaly, which it seems principally entailed an FDL with an interdictor & some (probably gimbaled) frags. They were quite upset that so many Cmdrs were yelling and insulting them for trying to protect the 'wildlife'. I encouraged them to keep up the good work & reassured them they were doing the right thing even though it must have felt like King Canute ordering the tide to not come in ;)

Help people when you can, listen to what they have to say. You don't know what's going on in their life unless you are prepared to listen.

Where you see the good deed done, I see a griefer obstructing others from playing the game their way. Is that what friends are for?

"Hue, hue, it's one of these once in a lifetime event and all the peaceful players come out their holes. Let's see how many we can annoy to heck this time while only wearing minimum figleaf excuse."

If I was ED I'd put the kibosh on it right away. the crying and tears is kinda going to overshadow a potentially interesting event.

It is easy to be judgemental :) They are just playing a different and interesting way and are as unironically enthusiastic about the game as I am.

Do you have any interesting stories where ED made a difference in someone's life (or your own)?

Like in "I annoyed the heck out of other people so they lost any joy in online games and maybe even space games?". No, I'm more of a cooperative player.

I do co-op too, I cooperated with the pro-xeno Cmdr.

If you have an issue with (entirely avoidable) PvP here's a more appropriate thread:

On topic:
I started out playing the original Elite when it came out, on a BBC model B with a disk drive, my avatar on this forum is a pic of the Acornsoft badge I 'won' by reaching Elite, filling out the postcard that came in the box with the code the game gave me, and posting it off. There are (or used to be) a dozen or so of us on this forum that had these badges or the later firebird ones.

It was a memorable time in my youth (I was 13 or so), and time spent with my dad (he had his own savegames) and probably the first time I remember working hard to achieve something that wasn't easy so that badge was a great source of pride for me in my early teens. When I started playing ED (in January 2015, just after launch) I promised myself I would 're-earn' my Acornsoft badge by getting Elite within a year of starting. I reached triple Elite with a week to spare, I have written about it on this forum (years ago now).

ED remains a connection to my dad, he died a long time before ED came out but I like to think he would have enjoyed it as much as I do.
