I rocked up to that community goal in open yesterday. Winged up with some random folks and dropped into the only low-intensity combat zone.
Full of other commanders floating around doing nothing. Every now and then three enemies would spawn and everybody would descend onto them - I've never seen Anacondas torn apart so quickly. Then the wait was on for the next one to spawn before there was a scrabble for it.
It was really great seeing so many commanders working together and in the same space, lag wasn't an issue for me. Everybody was generally friendly otherwise.
The snags was with the shear number of commanders (plus friendly AI) the enemy forces didn't last more than a few seconds.
When a commander accidentally clipped another player, whether with misbehaving turrets or getting cut up in the frenzy of everybody going after the same ship, they would inevitably turn red and 80% of the other commanders would then open up on them.
I only escaped with 20% hull from a FDL when it happened to me - I think he broke off and let me go, but not without a severe bruising - thankfully!
This is the closest I've actually come to gameplay that I was expecting when I signed up for the game - and it was good fun when ignoring the above issues. I later switched to a private group with two other players, which whilst didn't register on the epic gameplay scale, at least there were kills to go after.
