Open Play Exploring?

I'm about 1000ly from Lave and still moving out (actually, up, perpendicular to the galatic disk). I usually always play in Open, mostly 'just because' rather than to connect to specific other players. But I wonder if there's any actual point being in Open this far out? I meet the occasional NPC pirate/attacker, but that would be true in Solo too. Just curious how other commanders do long-haul exploring?

I always explore in open for chance encounters with other players. It would be nice if you could take a high res screenshot if you were the only one in the instance, however. Switching to solo just for the purpose is a bit of a pain...

Solo and groups should had never existed imo.

Or atleast a solo mode with another slot totally different of the open play cmdr.

I used to stay in open like you, 'just because' but when you are off in the dim and distant reaches there really is no point and I seem to get a smoother game in solo as a bonus. In fact, thinking about it, as a non combative trader/explorer/miner I'm starting to wonder why I play in Open at all. Maybe it's time to go join Mobius for me :)

I'm probably with you generally. Although I play in open, and trade/NPC bounty hunt mostly when not off on jaunts, even when I see other players it's usually a quick comms "hi" (if anything), so arguably I'm not gaining much by it. Then again, if I saw the same commander popping up in my regular trading haunts I might be a little more interested.

I wasn't aware (iro some of the other posts) that I can get better photos in Solo. I'll try switching across to that. I think it's F10 for a normal photo and Alt F10 for high res. BUT I am running the "low" graphics setting so it might be a moot point. I just took a nice snap of the galactic disk, with dark skies to the side where I'm 'above' the plane, and more stars below. It's a bmp format and this forum seems to need jpg, so I can't upload it.

Maybe. Has anyone reached Elite in exploration entirely in open since release? If not, there's still a chance you could win 1000 GBP (stupid American keyboard doesn't have a pound key) if you stay in open the whole time.

Play in open, had a random encounter with another cmder as I was visiting the stars of the Orion constellation had a chat, visited a few systems together and then made our separate way it was great!

I do play Exploration in Open play.

On a ship with basic Discovery Scanner only

Last week i am able to find the MAIA black hole by tailing another player ship which is heading to the blackhole direction

fortunately just your opinion....

Actually, the opinion of many others as well..,

I don't understand what's the aggravation from people wanting to play solo if this was the case....how many successful games are out there that allow players go back and forth, open/solo, on the same account, benefiting of the progress regardless??

That's right. None.

So, I don't think it's just his opinion...it's actually industry's opinion and STANDARD design for good reasons. It shouldn't work like that.

I always play in open.

I've never really gone to the center of the galaxy or anything, but I still find it rather special to fly out into the unknown to explore an nebula off in the distance and then suddenly met another player out there in the void. It just makes that encounter that more special. Even exchanged locations with each other so we could go and scan black holes we found in the "vicinity". However...this was before we had the ability to tag the discoveries with our names and get a bonus for handing these in first...I'm not sure I would do the same thing this time...hehe...:D

The encounters would still be special though! ;)

As has been mentioned the only thing that forces me out of Open play, is not being able to take Hi-Res screenshots. I really hope they can work out a way around the exploit, even (if it was just relating to combat) making it so you cannot have Hardpoints deployed.

So I explore in Open Play until I see something spectacular and then have to exit and go into Solo, take a picture, and then back into Open again... Mildly frustrating, but hey ho.

I like the thought of possibly bumping into another Commander 1,000s of Lys from settled worlds, so we could exchange stories. So as I always have done, I'll continue to play in Open and wait patiently for the exploit fix.

isnt it nice that people take opinions for fact. I could not care less about it. FD made it like that. Deal with it.

Well, I'd rather have the off-line single player game that was offered when I backed the kickstarter but it evaporated so I'll play solo instead.

I'm out exploring in the Mobius group mode, i started the game in open until the cheaters & griefers started to ruin open play, then joined Mobius & played that style since.
