Open play FPS drop

I've had a Vive for a month or so now and I've spent quite a lot of time trying to get the settings right. I have a overclocked GTX1080, but my CPU is on the old side. It's a i7-4770K overclocked to 4.2GHz and I have 32gb RAM.

Tonight I wanted to try to nail down settings with stay at 90fps in a HAZREZ or as close of possible. So I set everything to low (using EDProfiler) and wanted to work upwards step-by-step till I had started to see a consistent drop.

After a while I got bored and wanted to jump in for some multi-crew in open play, but to my surprise I went from an FPS of around 90 (sometimes dropping to 74) to just 21 FPS. I switched modes a few times because I couldn't believe it.

So why does open play cost me around 60-65fps? Is it some kind of CPU limitation? Something must be seriously wrong but I can't think what it is.

I apologise if this is a common issue that I could have found here on the forum. I've read a lot here, but nothing about this.

edit: Ah... funny how as soon as you ask a question you immediately stumble across the answer:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/343689-Low-FPS-rate-on-Open-Play-mode

So it could just be a bug? If anyone knows how to work around this problem I'd love to know how. I can't play multi-crew in 2D...

Open naturally uses more of the Ethernet adapter. Some adapters do most of the work in the driver software and consume relatively large amounts of CPU time to do so.

Have a look for an updated driver for your adapter. There are oodles of possibilities with Open causing slowdowns, this is just a simple one to start with. Then the Fun With Networking really starts :D

I don't have that at all! I amn on the Rift and got an i7 6700 and a 1080

Its all smooth with or without multicrew and I play open only anyhow!

make sure Super sampling is at 1.0 and HMD quality as high as you like.. my HMD quality is at 2.0 and everything I care for cranked up to ultra..

Ok so reading more of the thread that I linked above it seems the work around is to start unfriending people that are exploring until my FPS in open play goes back to normal.

Please fix this FD...

It's a bug introduced with the new friends list and 2.3.

Large groups and open suffer from fps drops unless you unfriending people.
It's probably easier to see it outside of vr since we have spacewarp etc to smooth things over.
But I noticed last night I was seeing ASW artefacts in supercruise while playing in Mobius.

I didn't get those in solo or small groups, but why have a hundred people on your friends when you ever interact with six of them?

In short I cleared my friends list and it seems to have sorted most of the issue.
