Open Play is not really open play

I want to help one of my squadron member with stream snipers in open play which he was stream the game but when i logged in to help him i did not see him in the same system even tho i could see where he was sitting out side the station in open and i was in open too

How can this really be OPEN PLAY if i cant even join him cuz of the way servers or what ever is the problem.

Surely if i log into open play in our home system and we as a group should get pulled into the same server or what ever the case may be so again how can this really be fair when u got 3 on one or 3 on 2 when our won members of our play faction group cant join the ones who our defending our system or help our own members.

So i have to sit here and watch it all unfold and not get into the action

There are no servers per se... it's peer to peer instancing through a broker... if you don't match with anyone suitable (based on things like latency to other peers etc) a new instance is made.

As above... being in a wing/ on friends list helps increase the chance of instancing, unless your connectivity is bad.

Being an Aussie, I rarely instance with anyone.

Ok so i did not know about the port forward that now set up how ever when i logged in any other time i never had this problem before normally i would see them in open play before the change i just did i could not join them as wing was full at the time but i really wanted to get in on the action and found it very frustration about this.

Here, you dropped these.

.... ,,,, . ,,

I see a few in Deciat. Yesterday I had a noob cmdr ram me in the slot of Garay Terminal, even though I was all the way to the side and there was plenty of room for both our ships. 😁
Yeah, the hotspots are the only place I've ever been able to see one or two people.

I remember "The Hunt" with those roleplayed people, I knew of 30+ flying around the system... I saw one person in supercruise at that time.(Corollary: Also why RP events are a bad idea)

The instancing is terrible. Actually this is the reason I sorta rage quit during distant worlds 2 and didn't really come back until now. Thought it might be a good social event but every time I was in a location where there were known to be hundreds if not thousands of people I was lucky if I saw 2 or 3 in the same system, let alone close enough to even see. Doing something to improve on instancing I think would be great for the social / multiplayer aspect of the game, especially if we ever get the space legs.

the game would need to be totally re written to work on a centralised server like planetside 2 eg

and amazon ecs terminated as there isp
cant see that ever happening this is the best it will ever be I am afraid due to amazon ecs web services
maybe elite 5 will get it right but ill be long dead by then sob...…...
pity they would have sold a projected 10 times the amount of copies which would have easily paid the increased cost of a centralised server

One of the best ways to get an idea of how a game is regarded by the players is to have a quick look at the forums, so I went to look at the planetside forums....oh dear, nearly the entire first page of the general discussion forum is consumed by complaints..and they don't talk all gentlemanly there either!

Sure the forums are a sunset of the player base, but in my experience people with issues are more likely to go to the forums to complain.

Basically a centralised server does not fix everything and claiming they would have sold ten times the copies if they had a centralised server for ED is not actually based on any evidence, but it certainly appears it won't stop the complaints!

It would have solved the instancing issues, session persistence and lots of things that derives from it (clogging, hge logging etc.) including making cheating harder
But to support the infrastructure (multiple session servers hosted in different geographic regions) it would mean either a monthly subscription or ingame microtransactions...

AFAIC, i'm pretty ok with the current setup and its limitations - but i'm not the one complaining about instancing, clogging and/or open only stuff.
Free things have to trade off something to stay free.

ya true enough it is just a wild guesstimation on my part admittingly.
I knew exactly how this game would unfold and its limitations itsa online game that's practically offline lol and I am fine with it too.
why wouldn't I be being an original 84er.
I just think the game would have been massive via a centralized server imho guesstimation.
not in game footage

you can say that again lol

One reason I joined mobius and found friends to instance with easily. All of us were within a couple of states in the US of each other.
OK, MO, TX, KS, CO, NE.
Makes a big difference.
I wish more people used Mobius, because this is one of the things I actually like about Mobius - the regional sub-groups. I have the opposite problem of the OP, in that ED will instance me with people on the other side of the planet IRL, so I'm getting all sorts of lag when we're together. Playing Mobius limits me to other American players, which gives better performance, but it unfortunately it seems that Mobius is all but empty these days, based on my experiences during the last couple of CGs.

I've not seen anyone in Mobius for weeks. :(

I suppose I could just block everyone who makes my instances laggy. The block feature is one of the best features in this game! :D
