Newcomer / Intro Open Play vs Solo

I apologize if this is in one of the FAQ's (I've looked all over / searched and can't find a simple explanation), but can someone give me a quick explanation about the options Open Play and Solo? I realize that Open Play is probably multiplayer, but it seems like I can take my save (?) from one to the other -- or at least my ship? What is the difference between the two?

Sorry if this doesn't make a ton of sense, just trying to figure out why I would choose solo or Open Play. Thanks!

As far as I know, Solo is a connected Universe, but you're the only player in it. Consider it an instance with only you in it (along with NPCs) whereas Open Play is the same universe, just other players in it with you. Everything carries over from one to the other. People in Open Play have been having problem with docking due to the number of people, so the switch to solo, dock, then reswitch back to open play.

Great! Thanks for the responses, it is kind of what I figured. I just wondered if I was missing trade or a part of the game by learning to play in solo a little bit.
