Open Play

Back in June when I was looking into ED and deciding if I wanted to buy into the Beta or not one of the features that tipped the balance (leaving me £50 poorer and an entire Galaxy richer) was Open Play.

The idea that not only was there going to be a Galaxy for me to exist in that didn't care about me or give me any special treatment but that the very same galaxy was going to be partially populated by human players who also wouldn't care about me was something that got me very excited. This was possibly the biggest draw for me. I didn't care that some players may just decide to pootle about the Galaxy killing smaller players like myself or that some may find a questionable way to use the gameplay mechanics.

None of that has changed

I love the fact that when I see a player it put's me on edge because (even though I rarely carry cargo) they may just decide to attack me anyway. I also like that I've found Pirates bothering other players and sometimes see traders boost themselves into the back of the dock. I just feels more real, more dynamic and less predicable.

I guess what I'm saying is the whole reason I was excited about multiplayer was because it meant the world became as difficult to predict as the world outside my house (possibly more so. Nobody has decided to stab me for the content of my college bag yet :D ). But this seems to be an opinion that many people do not share. People who are adamant that killing someone with no reason is griefing and that Piracy is borderline griefing especially if the cargo being carried is not that valuable.

I personally am a passive player. I fly a Cobra equipped with a mining laser (You can get 300,000cr per hour in Colerind if you're lucky) and low level pulse lasers to defend against AI (I don't think I've ever come out on top in a PvP conflict) but the idea that one system may contain a brutal Pirate who kills traders after taking their cargo or even just a space serial killer is something I like.

It's something I've read about in the fiction for the games and it's something I feel really enriches the game world.

So what do other people think? What role do you play and how do you feel about other players intervening with you in Open Play?

My role is the researcher. I examine the behavior and tactics of other players, analyze their ship's engines and differences, but particularly fascinated about players inner body organs. I'm still in the quest to find aliens among them. In 400B stars universe there must be aliens right? So I'd say I'm the space zoologist.
