Open source parts of the game

This is an idea from a thread I was replying to.....

I’m thinking FD should open source some of the code to the community.

Firstly for ship creation as they have to have a ship builder app ! Let the community take a shot give them a forum section where designs and spaces can be posted, and then have one of their staff liaise with that forum to bring some of them in game.

Same for plots/missions, I would jump at being able to write missions for the game. I’ve written a couple of threads where I’ve broken down Star Wars in to player missions it took about 10 minutes to break it out in to follow on missions.

while i dont think they would ever trust us with balancing ship stats and stuff the actual models might be interesting as variations of existing ships.

they should tap into the community a bit more tho. they made that tutorial where you fly thru rings right? no reason why they cant use the same things to make race tracks, and have the community submit location ideas for them would be cool.

With all of the great 3rd party websites and addons we our community create it’s makes sense to open source the tools and see what we can come up with.

like I said if they can spare someone to police a forum for user submitted content instead of the e suggestions one, then we can make the game survive longer.

I've been coming up with ideas on what the various ED shipbuilders (usually Lakon) could do to improve on their existing designs (either through minor upgrades or releasing new variants) for quite a while now. Some of the more recent ideas I've had:
  • Type-7
    • Add the 5th hardpoint on the bottom of the ship, change the top hardpoint to a medium so the ship can use seismic charges
    • Create a new (flatter?) variant of the Type-7 that trades some cargo space for the ability to land at outposts
    • Create a armed trader/gunship variant of the Type-7, similar to the Keelback and Type-10
  • Asp family
    • Create a militarized variant with a size 5 distributor and 4 medium hardpoints
    • Give the Asp Scout some combination of:
      • Another utility mount (or maybe 2)
      • A little bit more straight line speed
      • A little bit more cargo capacity
      • A price reduction
  • Imperial Clipper
    • Create a new variant that somehow manages to have a fighter bay (I'm not sure if it would fit though)
    • Create a variant that gets all the guns
Unfortunately, I don't work in FDev's ship balance department, so I can't actually make any of these. That said, I would absolutely love a chance to get to play around with the models to see what I could make from them.

I don't see why FDev couldn't hold a contest where the community could submit ideas for race tracks. Submissions could be in the form of <5 minute videos, with the community voting for the one(s) they want to see in-game. The most popular tracks (say, 5 of them) could then be added into the game.

Of course, this would require a racing mode to be added first, so I'm not holding my breath for anything like this to happen until at least 2021.

I'm pretty sure ship building will never be handed out to community. Neither missions, reviewing those, filter out copyrighted material, lore mess ups, it's just too much. Paintjobs and other cosmetics on the other hand should be. Have a submission site, a staff to review them rigorously, and which gets through, include it in the store. And since cosmetics are sold for real money, the original creator can get a share from the profit.

I'm afraid the only time we'd get the opportunity to do that is when the game is sunset. They made promises that when the game 'ends' they will hand us over server side code so we can continue to play the game offline (this managed to offset a lot of the offline gate anger). It all depends on how long Frontier can keep milking this cow (as it is with any business) but as long as they get milk, we won't be able to customise the beef burger. 🐮🐮
