Morrowind is a great game, but the old engine runs like canine feces when using overhauls like MGSO, and it is still buggy and tends to crash alot. So I went looking for options and found this.
From the FAQ:
[h=2]What is OpenMW/OpenMW-CS?[/h]OpenMW is a free, open source and modern engine based which reimplements and extends the one that runs the 2002 open-world RPG Morrowind. The engine comes with its own editor , called OpenMW-CS which allows the user to edit or create their own original games. Both OpenMW-CS and OpenMW are written from scratch and aren’t made to support any third party programs the original Morrowind engine uses to improve its functionality.
NOTE: Playing Morrowind with this engine still requires the Morrowind data files that you own.
To give you a better idea of what this project is about, here are some of the goals for OpenMW and OpenMW-CS.
Version 1.0 Goals:
NOTE: The above wishlist indicates the willingness of the OpenMW devs to work on these features, but are currently not high on the priority list unlike the version 1.0 goals.
OpenMW-CS will support the editing of all OpenMW features. We aim for the editor to stay fully up-to-date with the corresponding OpenMW version, allowing the user to edit any newly implemented features. The OpenMW-CS is code-wise not based on the editing tool (CS) which came with the original Morrowind game, but it does improve the later’s good points, drops the bad and ugly points and adds additional features and tools that makes it more a tool made by modders for modders.
Important properties of the OpenMW-CS are:

I'm currently playing v0.41 and it's working great, I'm using a controller since it offers native support for several of them like the Xbox and PlayStation controllers. It's a bit clunky with the PC UI, but it works well enough. Controller GUI elements might be implemented later.
Mods like Better Bodies, Better Heads, Better Clothes and such provides a bit of an upgrade for the visuals and they still work. Tamriel Rebuilt and Morrowind Rebirth also work. Though certain mods like Vurts tree and flora mods requires the old engine and the gfx extension mods. If you can look past the 2002 gfx, OpenMW is the better option for the speed and stability alone.
If you want to play a mage, I highly recommend this mod: Galsiah's Character Development
