opentrack on linux

I am trying to get opentrack to work with Elite through steam on Ubuntu. I successfully compiled and built opentrack (not entirely sure how) and it runs but I cannot seem to get it to work in Elite. I was hoping somebody here might have some suggestions or maybe know of something I am missing. Sorry if my post isn't very detailed, I'm not sure what all is relevant. If there is anything else needed I am happy to post other information as needed.

Thanks in advance Commanders!

First of all, I think you're likely to get better answers on the Gaming on Linux subreddit than here - E:D often pops up there, and it's a community dedicated to the art of getting Windows games running properly on Linux. There are often discussions on the topic of controllers and making input schemes work through Proton.

You might want to look into Input Remapper. It's a nifty little app that - as the name implies - allows you to remap input devices. If (always key with input devices) it detects OpenTrack as an input device, you should be able to remap it to a virtual controller.

There may be compromises involved, such as having to activate headlook mode with a button mapping (much like you do in the game when using a thumbstick for headlook), unless you can persuade WINE/Proton to pass through the headlook input as a headlook input. The sub I linked above is, I suspect, the best place to ask about this.

According to https://beam.eyeware.tech/games-opentrack-webcam-head-tracking-software/ , ED and ED:H are supported in OpenTrack (yes - I'm inching myself closer to re-starting ED on my big screen with head and possibly eye tracking). I remember it to work directly with my old Tobii back in the days. And since ED supports the use of a dedicated analog input for headlook, it should (yeah, famous last words) not be too much of an issue. Technically, I have currently headlook on an analog thumbstick of my right stick. Practically, it's damn hard to seperate wrist and thumb movements well enough for that to work...

This fellow seems to be giving some pretty good advice on how to get it running in wine, if you are using proton with steam, seem that it might be quite simple to configure. He's using it with another flight sim, but the key seems to be protontricks to get wine to work with it; Could be worth having a look at.
