Opinion needed, would this spec be OK for Occulus?

Since the Rift is now £399, it's at the price level where I'm seriously tempted. The only issue may be my PC. It's not a top-of-the-line machine. I spent more on it this time than I have before, but nowhere near the best, I just can't afford that.

Current spec is an AMD FX 6300 3.5Ghz with 8Gb RAM and a GTX 970, which runs Elite great on Ultra settings.

How well/poorly would this run Elite in VR. I'm assuming I won't be running on top settings, but would it be OK or would I be better waiting and upgrading the PC first?

Hey! I was able to run with just a GTX 770 and I5-2500 CPU with 12 GB RAM, worked fine on Oculus. Not on max details of course but it was still pretty enough. I merely experienced slowdowns of a few sec when approaching stations sometimes but I still have these stutters with my upgraded card (1080) so I believe that might be ED specific anyway. So all in all you should be fine. VR makes ED a much better experience (except for the screen door effect).

Should be okay, but you will probably be nearer the bottom end of the graphics settings.

CPU is not as big of a deal these days, even with VR. A friend of mine was using a pretty ancient CPU and getting reasonably OK performance for ED.

When I first set up my Rift, I was using a GTX 970 on an intel i7 4770k @ 3.8 MHz, and it ran well enough on "VR Medium" settings. It'll be a noticeably lower detail level than you're used to on your monitor, but it should run well enough, and there's room to tweak those settings and optimize it a bit.

I had a PC with very similar specs to Orvidius and managed to get respectable performance out of my Vive with 8GB RAM - but 16GB would be preferable if an upgrade is an option.

Tweaking with the Steam VR settings for post super-sampling really helped make text readable with a minimal impact on performance - I know Oculus has something similar but not sure what it's called.

Also highly recommend making use of Asynchronous Space Warp to keep the experience as consistent as possible.

I was using a GTX970 when my Rift arrived. I enjoyed VR a lot.

But after updating to a 1080ti, i noticed, what i was missing. And i felt motion sickness with the 970, which immediately went away, after switching to the 1080ti.
I actually wasnt able to play longer than 2, maximal 3 hours, i now can play indefinitely without any form of nausea.

As long as you are aware, that you are at the low end of the line and do not feel annoyed, that you have to use low settings, you can enjoy it.
If you can afford anything in the range of a 1070 or better, go for it, as it will increase your experience a lot.

[edit] Oh, just read your last post... welcome to the world of VR. :)
Make sure to aim for high framerate over image quality. It helps a lot to make it a better experience.

2nd day and I'm getting more used to it. I've settled on VR Low as it seems to be a much more consistent frame rate, but it still looks pretty good. Combat in VR is insanely good fun, but I've just been flying around poking my nose into stuff :D

I have also become a fan of locking the cam to the horizon in the SRV, it's much better for me with far less motion issues.

This is great !

here are the offical recommend requirements vor VR:
https://www.elitedangerous.com/en/made-for-vr/

It will run with 8GB of Ram but you may experience degraded performance over time in a playsession.

This thread interests me because i too have the fx6300, and planned on waiting for vr until after a cpu upgrade.

In the recommended ed specs above, it lists the fx 4350 cpu and the gtx 980 gpu.

Arn't the fx 4359 and fx 6300 a similar spec performance wise, and i have the gtx 1060 6gb gpu, which some say is slightly better than the gtx 980.

So maybe my system would already run a vr headset now at medium settings.
I have 16gb ram too.

edit: also looks to me that the recommended specs for most vr's are really the minimum required.

it will be ok.... but forget VR ultra, i reckon VR medium will be your limit (which BTW still knocks spots off even 4k ultra on a single screen imo)

the cpu is a bit pants but even so i think you will be ok... but do check your usb 3.0... run the vr compatibility checker.. i would not worry TOO much if it says your cpu is a bit weak, but if it fails your usb 3, then you will have to buy the reccomended usb 3 card as well.

after the price cut of the rift, imo it is getting easier and easier to just blindly reccomend VR to the masses, esp when you consider all the free software you get with the rift....

DO IT :D

edit... should have read more before posting. :) welcome to the club

@nosscar.... ED is way harsher on pc spec requirements in VR than most other vr games, certainly more than any made for vr games. so assuming you can run ED, you will be laughing with the majority of apps.

only games up there with ED are i would say, assetto corsa, pcars, Dirt rally.... basically games with vr modes but not made for vr. i bet all the oculus specific stuff will be just fine

I do this too. It gives me a sense of scale, up and down, and how steep some of the stuff I am driving up is as I actually have to look up or down to see where I am going.
