Opinion?

I made this cutter build. I'm a little concerned about the shields being too weak. My argument for the point defences is i want a defense against anti shield weapons, like reverb torps, etc. Anyones opinion is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Primarily PvE. I want to be able to effectively do Elite level pirate takedown missions and has rez stuff. I want versatility though, so thats why i have the point defenses and the collector limpets. limpets for materials and point defenses for if someone tries to gank me or something. I dont think NPC's are going to get through shields so. Im a decent pilot too but that only helps so much in a cutter.

EDIT: Oh yeah and cargo because idrk what else to put in the class 6 slot, and carrying some pricey cargo attracts pirates. I dont really like to undersize stuff its a pet peeve of mine but, im open to any suggestions

Drop 2 of the point defense and replace them with 0A Skill boosters HD/Super Caps and you'll be over 6,000 raw and 12,000 Thermal resist.
NPC's are going to be hard pushed to get through your shields as they are, but a gank wing might remove whatever shields you have with a few torpedos 🤷‍♂️
Enjoy your Cutter however you fly it, you'll learn soon enough what works best for you ;)

Okay, ill do that now. Thank you.

You’ll never run into reverb torps in PVE so no use to build around it.

Also lose the guardian shield boosts and get more armour or module protection instead, or even more SCBs.

it’s waste to use up a size 5 slot for an extra 200MJ of shield when you already have 3K plus. You’d be better served by a lot more armour and armour resistances or a lot more shields via an SCB.

You have too many point defence for PVE, one or 2 is plenty. You could get more shield boosters but for PVE you have more than enough shields already.

Although, consider the Vette or even an Anaconda as alternative large ship for PVE.

To survive ganks that's more than sufficient.

PD is more or less useless against reverb torps. Even four of them won't propably help.
But they will keep the groms away, so I guess you will be fine if you bail out.

Your hull is a bit weak, that will go down fast against a plasma or fragboat IF (and that is a pretty big if) your shields go down.

But was wise enough to mention...

Which shows an awareness of one of the benefits of flying in open...
I dont usually fly open. But I want to. I took my PvE krait to deciat once to see what would happen. it was a lot of fun lol. Ill get rid of the shield reinforcements in exchange for more boosters and go for some more hull and module reinforcements.

(Will try an experiment ;))

Hey, @Bigmaec - got a reasonable Open Cutter Build in Coriolis to share?

Not really.

My trade Cutter Golden Arches uses an now-unobtainable class 5 prismatic with increased hull mass stat,
and my tritium miner Cutter uses an 8C biweave for 4600 mj of shields

I once was attacked by a ganker flying out of a starport, and the quad rails didn't even tickle.
I lost maybe half a ring - not even boosting - until the mass lock.

Generally I tend to apply the rule of thumb: 1000 mj for a medium ship is amply gank-safe
for a big ship 1200+ should work. 2000+ if you want to avoid even wing ganks.

And if you're not dumb like me, it usually works...

True, but it doesn’t sound like they intend to fight said person (wouldn’t be able to with that build anyways). Should have more than enough defences to high wake out of there pretty comfortably if their intention is to run away, whether the attacker has reverb torps or not. Also all the more reason to have more armour and module protection.

so what youre saying is, 7,000 is definitely enough? lol

I upped the armor and module protection in the updated build listed above. Ive never been much of a hull tanker so im not sure if i did whats best, do you have any suggestoins on that? ill put the link here too.

Amply. If it's a build which won't fight against PvPers (and you don't want to fight PvPers in a Cutter alone), I'd even say skip two or three boosters for a PD and a heat sink.
Heat sink is always useful and breaks the target lock in a combat situation, and a PD can take out groms, which makes life easier. Personal choice though.

Anything over 3000 in a Cutter is more then enough, if you aren't dumb like me in the vid above

I wasnt even thinking of heat sinks lock breaking application. I use it all the time in my python when running away from people lol. probably a good idea.

EDIT: Went ahead and threw on a K warrant along with a heat sink.

They are just super versatile.
Overheating because of a quick fuel scoop? Heat sink
Carrying naughty things and getting scanned? Heat sink
PvPer pulls you out of supercruise? Heat sink

I nearly always have one, even on 4 utility ships.

My problem is, I usually try and maintain symmetry on all of my ships. only real exception i will make is for chaff/heatsink/kwarrant. in this case chaff is kind of... you know... so. heat sink kwarrant it is then.

+1 for heat sinks. I always have a heat sink on every build.
