Well, it's not PvP, but I've been shooting down Chieftains with my FDL left and right in CZs. Contrails make a pretty twisting motion when they roll.
The point is, equipment is only part of it, flying ability is the other. I've seen a Sidewinder successfully pirate a Python, so take that for what it's worth.
The FAS isn't a complete match for an FdL, in my opinion. I had hoped for a Med combat ship that could threaten the position of the FdL in PvP. I was simply looking to see how close it comes in the opinion of PvP minded Commanders. I never could get decent in PvP, even in an FdL, so some more successful players might be able to sate my curiosity. It's not like I have the skill to have a go with a PvP FdL.
Assuming experienced and comparable PvP pilots on both sides...?
I think if the Chieftain goes SCB, it should be quite a tasty match-up.
Unfortunately, because most players don't appreciate that SCB = meta, most SCB FdL's will only have to face sub-standard Chieftains, optimistically built with an over-estimation of the effectiveness of a bi-weave hull-tank hybrid.
Ofc where there is a significant skill advantage the hybrid or hull-tank often wins anyway. But where both pilots really[/] know what they're doing? SCB = king.
What I'm saying is, as the vids start to come out, don't pay too much heed to the inevitable ton of hybrid Chieftain v SCB FdL vids. They just pose the question whether the Chieftain guy has enough skill to overcome his build handicap.
The truly interesting question, ship v ship, will be SCB Chieftain v SCB FdL. I predict that the FdL will still edge it though, as even taking into account that the Chieftain has the happy options of either c6 bi-weave for better active regen, or c6 SCB for overall health pool, the FdL retains significant base shield advantage.
It could be close, though...
Considering that everything has been buffed and you can get crazy gains in shield health/regen it would all come down to pilot skill. The chieftain would have better time on target but I feel would lose out to the FDL's raw firepower and shield strength. That being said, If one was lucky enough to get a few rams in, that may change the outcome.
I have yet to fight a FDL but think it will be interesting to try out due to the bi-weaves insane regen and the durability of the armor. Just gotta watch that canopy!
Off-topic a bit but one thing that worries me slightly is that via better spawns + Mat Trader, premium ammo is more available than ever. That 30% is a larger margin than the margin of competitive performance, between two apex guys ... an increasing problem, methinks, if one is using but not the other.
If any rams connect in a 1v1 then immediately the FdL pilot is guilty before proven innocent on the skill + xp front. Granted, anyone can make a momentary mistake and desync plays a role (especially in Betas or against dodgy connections) but really, there should be none.
That one wrinkle aside, though, 100% agree that it does look like there are going to be some interesting vids ahead.

*the 13th Legion's collective ears just pricked up*
That's what I am worried about. I'm all for synthing regular ammo if the opposing party is made aware that you are. Premium is another story and there is no real way to tell if the other party is using it. Sadly most gankers/ poor pvp pilots will be using premium.
Can't rep you anymore![]()
Premium Packhounds FTW!
What is it good for?
I dont understand what on earth were FDEV thinking when introducing the premium trash. In PVE there is no point since NPCs melt anyway, in PvP it becomes a grind to win.
What is it good for?
I wonder how the PvP Community has responded to the Chief's canopy Buff? Does the Chief now stand up to the FDL? Or was the change not enough for those that discounted it because of it's canopy issue?
Premium ammo costs too damn much. I don't even like to synth basic ammo. I don't want to grind any more than I already do. I guess I'm stingy that way. Besides, after engineering a ship, you've already got extra firepower. Why ruin what might just be a good fight worth remembering?

Huh. Absolutely nothin'. Say it again, now.
